One of Hong Kong's oldest and best known Indian restaurants with an extensive lunch buffet and music and entertainment during the evenings.

Interesting to read Know it alls review. While I can sympathise with it I think Tandoor is actually a pretty decent Indian restaurant.

I tend to judge the food, because I can live with bad service, but if the food is not on the money then I would never return. Cant really be said if it were the other way round...

I go to Tandoor for their buffet, which I would actually rate above average. It is not the best Indian food you will ever have by a long way, but it is reasonably good. The makhni chicken is very nice, great biriyanis, and include some fish and vegetable dishes too. They also do a fresh salad, plenty of condiments and sauces and even offer some ok desserts (best one is Ras Malai). As part of the buffet they cook you fresh a small vegetable dosa to start with aswell.

They have some entertainment there either a large projector screen showing the bollywood-tastic movies, or they have some live singers who even taking requests which is nice!

Overall its by far the best Indian restaurant I have been to, but for Hong Kong I think its good.
One of the key ingredients of Indian hospitality (which includes Indian restaurants) is offering your guest a glass of water. Apparently the trainers at Tandoor neglected to inform their staff about this basic principle.

We visited this restaurant with a guest, who was hosting the evening and was eager to impress. "Nothing but the best..." was the theme of the evening and apparently even his taxi driver had agreed with him.

We arrived at around 9pm and were all suitably impressed with the decor. Yes, you'll find all the posh fittings in place and rare to find Lladro Ganesh statues worthy of being in a museum.

Unfortunately, we tend to judge a place by the quality of the service over the food. Most Indian restaurants can serve up decent food in Hong Kong, thanks to the thriving Indian community and the ex-colonial's fondness for a "good ruby". The food at the Tandoor was ok. On par with the rest of the places found on or near Hollywood road / SOHO area.

The "lamb chops" were not that special according to our guest, who apparently lives of them... but they were "ok".

The service levels were disappointing. We've probably been spoilt by the gracious hosts that used to manage this establishment where the staff was friendly, made the extra effort to check on you and fix problems as soon as they're brought to their notice.

Water glasses were not refilled, there was no Kulfi and generally we got the feeling that the staff either had an off day, or were adopting the "we're so cool we can be snotty" gimick.

In all fairness, the manager did offer to replace the Kulfi with some other desserts, which we err .. chose not to accept. When a man wants Kulfi, he wants Kulfi!

Overall rating would probably be a 3 out of 5. If it was the only game in town, we'd give it 4.. but there are better places offering value, service and a great dining experience which would make you want to go back...
