We went back to Jashan after a 4+ month break, given that we were extremely disappointed with food. Well, Rana (the ex-manager from Tandoor) has just joined them a few weeks back and has revamped the lunch and dinner menus, hired new chefs and given this place the touch that had made Tandoor one of the best Indian restaurants in town. We've also heard good things from several other people who have been back.

We were a bit disappointed when we went to La Bodega the other day for some food and a couple of drinks.
-- The place is not designed for eating. Its more of a bar which happens to serve a few tapas. The waitress was a bit patronising trying to explain what a tapas bar was to us, but then we don't blame her, probably the standard "counter the customers disappointment" training. -- The variety of tapas was not that great. Some standard items were missing. -- There was no paella or a main dish. No self respecting tapas bar in Spain would go without a paella or a filler dish. -- The Sangria was a bit too sweet. The bar chose to use syrup as their sweetener. When we asked them not to add syrup I think they added water. -- The cheese plate was awesome. Good value and great selection. Definately one of the best we've had. -- We ended up ordering a couple of dishes from Stormy Weathers and ended up returning one of them which was fairly unedible. The total for 4 people for a bunch of tapas, two jugs of sangria and a bottle of wine ended up being about $250/person. A bit pricey for the quality and variety, but not overpriced for the location. byshri, August 14, 2003
Decent food and good cold pints. Unfortunately like all Irish pubs in HK, it is a bit overpriced after happy hour (which is a generous 2 for 1).
The staff are friendly and there seems to be a good mix of regulars and people who wander in. Overall, nothing extra special, just another hole in the wall we wander into every now and then after work. byshri, July 13, 2003
This place has been one of our long term favorites and it lives up to its reputation every time we go there .... dead sober or not.
The food is usually cooked in a lot less oil than most of the Chinese restaurants and does not have any MSG in it. They definately do live up to their claim of healthier food. The steamed garoupa and eggplant are worth killing for and so are most of their other dishes. They serve up a hearty mix of Shichuan (or Shezhuan), Hunan, Cantonese and other fares. Definately worth the money and definately recommended. byshri, June 10, 2003
Walked into Stauntons for a quick drink and was pleasantly surprised (was at a pretty crappy SOHO place before that). The staff was friendly, the beer arrived quickly and the general population at the bar seemed pretty friendly.
Definately a "must stop at" place on the escalator. byshri, May 18, 2003
We used to recommend Jaspas to just about anyone who wanted 5 star food at reasonable prices. Unfortunately that recommendation has been withdrawn after today's meal.
The meals are served in an ultra-cramped environment with less than a foot space between tables. This is standard for many restaurants in Hong Kong. To add to this, the aircon was not turned on when we were there (outside temp was about 30 degrees) and some moron in a mercedes kept blowing the horn on the street. Both of these problems are not new to Jaspas and some people don't seem to mind them. I do. I am don't subscribe to the adage 'the finer things come to those who wait', particularly when it comes to food. The food took way too long to arrive and when it did, it arrived in a very haphazard manner with the starters showing up after the mains and one of the main courses arriving 10 minutes after the other three. The bottled beer took a good 15 minutes to arrive and the water took about 5. The food was above average, the smoothies were mediocre (I almost walked up to starbucks to get a drink halfway through the meal) and service was horrible. I think their set lunches during the week are probably still ok, given that the cook has a limited number of dishes to cook and most sets are pre-cooked. byshri, May 14, 2003
Dragon-I has an excellent lunch-time (12:30-2:30PM) dim sum buffet. You can choose from a list of 25 items and they'll bring them out as you order. All the usual dim-sum items were there, including har-gau, cha-siu bau etc and the exotic items like chicken feet, tripe etc.
The $88 (+10%) tab includes tea. Definately going there again. ======================= I have to add to this review and express my unhappiness with their happy hour / evening service. Dragon-I happens to be one of the "posh pretty people bars", catering to the err ... posh and pretty people. A couple of colleagues of mine and I happened to walk in there today for happy hour and ended up walking out in 5 minutes. Why? Well the service and more importantly the attitude was *horrible*. The bartender rudely told us we'd have to wait for our drinks because he was busy and the waiters didn't seem to care. Hello!!! We just need a beer... does not talk a brain surgeon to pour one! We were then quite abruptly told that there was no happy hour. I suspect 'Posh Pretty People' don't have to worry about happy hour. Someone I know who was there the same night, got charged $85 for a mohito. So, while their lunch is pretty good, this establishment has a bit of a schizo personality and is completely not recommended for happy hour. Unless.... you're a posh pretty person! I'm dropping the overall rating of this place from 4 to 2. byshri, April 24, 2003
Why would you want to open a restaurant in Soho and call it the Peak Cafe? Must be some brilliant branding thing. Unfortunately its this "branding" which bring backs memories of the Peak Cafe in its glory days when thousands of tourists could be seen on the Peak and there were very few options.
We checked out their new location in SOHO on Shelly Street and were left very disappointed. The beer was warmer than it should be, the bartenders were snotty and their happy hour was shorter than most bars we tend to frequent. I paid for a round of drinks and got 28 dollars back, which I did not pick up. The bartender picked up the tray on which the change was and I had to ask him for the $20 note. In a gesture, that I consider snotty, he then went on to take the 8 dollars out of the tray and left the money on the bar. What? Was 8 dollars too little a tip? Anyways, that was the impression I was left with, no matter what the intention was. I'd avoid this place if I were just meeting some friends for beers. We must admit that we did not try out the food / snacks, as we went to the Globe down the road for twenty dollar belgian beers. byshri, April 20, 2003
I usually hate going to Kublais. They make you select everything, including the sauces, which means, if the food turns out crap, its your fault! However, it had been a while since we've been there and figured it was a good deal when they told us that they had a special going on which included an all you can eat deal with an ice-tea / soft drinks for $58.
The service is good and the staff are very friendly. They were not too crowded, although I think that is probably because of the SARS nonsense going on. The meal did turn out ok, but I'm not sure if I can give the restaurant credit for it... given that I picked all the ingredients! Overall, not a bad deal. Its definately a place that I personally am not going to run back to (given my dislike of screwing up my own meals) but would definately recommend it for those of you who're looking for something different. byshri, April 6, 2003
I've never been a fan of Fat A's. Been there about three or four times, simply because someone choose the place because "it served italian food". The portions are large but the quality of the food has never impressed me.
The last time we had dinner at the Central location, the wine was borderline acidic and the pizza was umm.... a little bit better than Pizza Hut. Overall, seems to cater to the folks looking for a novelty restaurant, more than "good / quality italian food". The bottom line -- you may enjoy it, I know several people who do. Just don't invite me to your next soiree there. Results 1 - 10 of 21
