I am glad to find your sites and really enjoyed the contents.
Made me want to go back and live in HK again!!

Please advise which is the best/inexpensive way:

I guess I can wire (bank or Westunion) or draft?
Then should I send in US dollar and let the receiver to exchange in HK?

It is for US$1000 and time line is about 2 weeks.

hi - one note in addition to the transfer fee - make sure you check the FX rates as well because you can end up losing 5% depending on what exchange rate they give you. Alternatively if your friend has a USD account in Hong Kong, you can wire to that account pay the wire fee which should be around $20, and you get a better exchange rate when you exchange at a bank over here than you get to exchange the money in the US. I am not sure what rates western union would give but I can tell you the chase rates are not good.

have a look at using forex companies to do it for you. for $1000 they'll probably charge you a transfer charge, but in my experience this has never been more than $10 and you get a traders rate of exchange i.e. that rate that the banks get. gotta be worth a look.
