| Physical presence when applying for HK jobs????? Hi everyone, as i posted previously, i want to move to Hk to look for a job in early 08, right now i'm woking to save some money for my coming to Hk, but i also know its risky to come to Hk to look for a job, so my question is, can i apply to job offers or at least send CV to companies in Hk, as i've seen stated in previous posts most of them requires that the applicant has to be in Hk. Is it true???? I also know that i have 3months to look for a job, and even though i heard before that it takes only a short trip to Macau or china to get more 90 days, it was also posted here that the Hk immigration control is starting to suspect about this short trips to get another 90 days extension. Best wishes to all |

You can apply for jobs from overseas but unless they have a branch where you are or they are dealing with a recruitment firm where you are you will have to fly here for interview(s). In case you get the job, you do not need to be in Hong Kong during the visa application process. Why 3 months? This depends on your country of origin. Gweilos/Gweipos will get three months. However if you are from India, Pakistan, Indonesia, Sri Lanka... you will be lucky if you get more than 10 days (call this whatever you like I call this racism). Beware of the short trip thing, don't take immigrations officers for fools they have the right to refuse entry to anybody. Make sure you have a return ticket with you everytime you enter Hong Kong. BTW, I tried to apply for jobs from Europe way back it did not work that's when I decided to move here and try. Good luck to you. |

Do you know that this type of "economics" is often the origin of genocides? |

| hi there I would start your search now and build up contacts. You can then see if there are jobs you are interested in, in Hong Kong and have a likelihood of getting. Everyone's experience is different but you can certainly start enquiring now. There are jobs advertised in the SCMP. Bear in mind that the employer may need to justify employing a non-Chinese person so think which skills yhou have which are different. Best of luck LA |

| Hi Boneco Applying for jobs from OS you see on job boards is fine, however, expect your chances to be minimal to none. A lot of the generic job boards are local based hence targeted towards the HK market so they don't have the view of hiring people offshore who they have to sponsor. Use the job boards as a gauge for now to get an idea of who the recruiters are, the main firms hiring and what specific skills they are after. If you do apply to a company direct be aware of how that may affect your chances with that company down the track. Best to use your time now to set the groundwork for when you get here in 2008. Expect the job hunt to tough when you do get here but at least you will have a solid base to work from. Also keep a tab on changes on the HK immigration policy re highly skilled workers. This is where HK is looking to make changes that could work in your favour regarding your entitlement to work here and visa options. In this regard do a google search for the quality migrant scheme. |

| >> Thats brave. There is thin line between that and ignorance.. I don't want to side track an otherwise good thread ... but I challenge the person to reveal the name of their business along with such statements and see if economics really does work. |

| I am in much the same situation; overseas and looking for job opportunities in HK. nation, I am curious about your warning regarding applying for jobs now. Why would that hurt my chances later on? |

The fact that they give "gweilos/gweipos" 3 months as opposed to giving 10 days (15 actually) for South Asians is due to local immigration policies (which smack of racism) and not "economics". This has nothing to do with economics, it never did, and it never will! So before you go all postal and reply with your attempt at an "explanation", I suggest you check your facts before making remarks like that! |
