Cinco De Mayo's coming around again! There's a beach party on the 6th on Pui O Beach. Anyone know where I can get a sombrero? Gracias

not to be a historical purist or anything, but i've seen several threads about Cinco de Mayo and just thought I might add that Cinco de Mayo is NOT Mexico's independence day, which is actually officially celebrated on Sep. 16. The common misconception is that May 5 is national independence day, but it's actually just a small celebration commemorating the victory of Mexican forces over the French in the Battle of Puebla.
and then when the holiday came to the US it became bastardized as usual as a great opportunity to sell margaritas...hahaha....
having lived in Mexico, they don't really celebrate it with all that hoopla, except in Puebla, of course.
But nonetheless it's always fun to celebrate.

and doesn't mean we still can't partay like it is independence day though!

haha..interesting about puebla and the French. The other thing that's funny is that everyone dances salsa. I can hear salsa from my window. There's nothing Mexican about salsa, unless you're talking about salsa ranchero

If I were legally allowed to carry and fire handguns for a Cinco De Mayo party, or any party for that manner, I would. I'd use a Colt .45 revolver (or a pair) with blanks though. Falling bullets could hurt someone! Since I can't do that here, I'm looking for a nice sombrero instead.

Feliz Cinco de Mayo! Vaya Puebla! Weeeeeeeepa!

haha that's right- salsa is definitely not mexican- more like cumbia. actually out of all the latin american countries everyone, including mexicans themselves, say they are the worst dancers, lol.
