oh cool, thanks for all the links. i will check them out after work. but if i have a choice, i will prefer not to work with chinese community coz the reason for me to go abroad is to get to interact with people from other countries and learn more about their culture. but i guess its easier to work with chinese there though and then maybe i can meet some english friends.
i hope i didnt give out the wrong idea that i dun want to hang out with hk chinese. i do like to hang out with them too but i also like to meet more people from different countries and so many of my good friends are caucasian and not chinese.

Try some of these links to do with Chinese community in UK:

http://www.chinatownthemagazine.com/
http://www.dimsum.co.uk/index.php
http://lkcn.net/
http://www.linkchinese.net/
http://sacu.org/links.html

…to name just a few. Google something like ‘Chinese Community in UK’ or something like that for more. There are some discussion forums with contributions from UK born Chinese and also HK Chinese telling about their experiences in UK. I think they can advise you better and more directly and relevantly. UK born Chinese are generally far more Western than they are Chinese, so hanging out with them, you get the best of both worlds, and get around the problem you mentioned about not wanting to hang around HK Chinese.

Australia holiday work visa is quite easy to get as long as you're under 30 - never try it but heard from many friends. As for the kind of job, it all depends on your skills, a friend of mine had IT skills and managed to find job in an ad agency in sydney, so not everyone work in a fruit farm

Question

I've checked the sites you guys sent and it seems like the pay in england is much higher than in hk even for some simple jobs, though I know the living cost is also higher there. I might really give it a shot then. but now im thinking whether i should apply the working holiday visa or the work permit holder? i dunno much about the work permit holder. does it mean that i can live in uk as long as i want if i get the latter? and is it difficult to get such permit? do u think i can only apply for the jobs in UK after i get the visa approved??

Ive looked into working back in the Uk or to Oz myself!!! Tough decision.

ayukobaby - its not easy to get a work permit cos you cant apply it yrself. The employer have to apply it for you once you have been employed in their company! But most job posts i saw said you must be a Uk resident or have a valid permit as they do not provide visa..a bit stupid really!!!cos apparenly you have to apply a new working visa whenever you change job otherwise it is not valid!

im interested to see more info too as it will help me to plan.

work permits are usually for contracted work for jobs which cannot be filled locally, so employers recruit overseas. they are very difficult to get, unless you know someone who will apply on your behalf through a solicitor, who works around the law. i think only chance would be a job that requires native chinese to read and write chinese cos local chinese can't read and write. without a sponsor, or for casual job, no chance! stick with the working holiday visa.

Mina, so wat kind of jobs are u looking for in UK or Oz? im planning to get some super easy jobs like PA or receptionist or anything fun coz my sole purpose of going there is not to work and earn money but to travel around. yea its stupid for the work permit thing n its like its impossible to get it. i may stick with working holiday visa then unless they need a chinese social worker or chinese editor for the chinese or japanese magazine hehe
