Not sure why they want to tax you as if you are living in UK...may be because of visa issues - is their a special visa for journos working o/seas???

Assuming you will out here for more than 6-12 months then perhaps you can ask them to organise for you to be taxed as a HK resident.

Not 100% sure of tax rates in UK anymore but if it is say 25-30% including NI then this makes a big difference compared to 9-13% (I believe) on your salary.

Either way you should have more than enough to enjoy yourself on!
