Question Camping in Hong Kong and area

I will be moving to Hong Kong shortly and as a fanatic camper I am trying to find out if it will be possible for me to continue this hobby while living in Hong Kong

First question....
Are there campgrounds (as we know them in Europe and the US) in the area of Hong Kong and China or will I be taken to a mental institution when traveling with a tent and portable stove?

2nd question:
If it is possible to camp, is it worth bringing my stuff over to Hong Kong or is it easier to buy everything over there.

3rd question:
I have a "Coleman" portable stove and lamp. Will I be able to find these gas bottles?

Thanks for your help on this!

Dutchie

Hi Dutchie ,

HK is renowed for its beautiful country side so I am sure you will find a lot of places to hike or camp in HK.

Answer to your questions....
1. Are there campgrounds (as we know them in Europe and the US) in the area of Hong Kong and China or will I be taken to a mental institution when traveling with a tent and portable stove?

There are loads of camping grounds in HK and tents and stoves are common.

2. If it is possible to camp, is it worth bringing my stuff over to Hong Kong or is it easier to buy everything over there.

It is easy and cheap to buy stuff here. Also you only need a 2/3 season tent and sleeping bag here in HK coz the temperature ranges from a minimum of 7 deg C in the winter nights to 33 deg C under the summer sun.

3. I have a "Coleman" portable stove and lamp. Will I be able to find these gas bottles?

You prefer coleman fuel or white gas. Both are available but the Colemen fuel is a bit expensive. Popular fuels here in HK are cartridge gas (US$1 per can) and white gas.

Happy camping.

Regards,
Tom
