this is not true at all. there is no 6 month quarantine b/c of the bird flu...worst i've heard is a 1 month in home quarantine...big deal...
I just got back to the states from HK last week and met with the Ag people as well as with a reputable pet exporter.

but it is true that you cannot have the animal fly in the cabin with you...they must arrive as manifest cargo.

Hey JP... You said no 6 months quarantine? Then, I think you should read this final point and take notes. Here are some government links and Info for you. Hope they help.

Quote:
source: http://www.afcd.gov.hk
Dogs and cats imported direct from U.K., Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, Fiji and Hawaii are normally exempted from quarantine, subject to full compliance with the permit conditions.

IMPORT REQUIREMENTS for GROUP II COUNTRIES

Dogs and cats imported from the following 40 countries or areas may be exempted from quarantine provided the animals comply fully with the permit conditions.* As the rabies status or other factors may change in these countries, the list is subject to ongoing review. *

USA is a Group II Country

Dogs and cats imported from Group II Countries may be exempted from quarantine when all the permit terms and conditions are fully met.
• For dogs and cats of a Group II country origin, the animals must be accompanied by the certificates stipulated in http://www.afcd.gov.hk/quarantine/ls...oad/table2.PDF

IMPORT REQUIREMENTS -GROUP III COUNTRIES
Dogs and cats imported from countries other than Group I and II are subject to a minimum 4-month quarantine period.
• For dogs and cats of a Group III country origin, the animals must be accompanied with certificates as stipulated in http://www.afcd.gov.hk/quarantine/ls...ad/table3a.PDF[/b]

REMINDER

• Two sets of carbonised permits will be sent to the applicant. Please retain the top (white) copy for the retrieval of pets on arrival. The carrying airline and shipping company may require the shipper to produce the second copy before accepting the carriage of pets in the exporting country.

• Do not arrange for the transportation of your pets unless a Special Permit has been obtained from this department.

• Pets which have left Hong Kong are subject to the importation and quarantine restrictions as outlined above on their return to Hong Kong. Special Permits to bring back pets which have left Hong Kong need to be obtained from this department in advance.

• If deemed necessary (for instance, animals of doubtful history; animals showing clinical signs of diseases), the quarantine period for dogs and cats from all countries (Group I, II and III) may be extended. Dogs and cats without proper documentation may be required to undertake a minimum of 6 months quarantine at the owner's expense or returned to the country of origin.

well that stands to reason...a quarantine will take place if your paperwork isn't in order or if the animal appears to be sick. That's very different from saying that there's a 6 month quarantine on any pet coming into HK.

do your paperwork, follow the rules and hire Export-a-pet and there will be no Q. (hopefully!!)

on a similar note...we're looking at using Korean Airlines to ship our dogs to HK. -- (insert dog as airline meal joke here) -- does anyone have any experience with this airline and dogs?

Pacific Pet Transport

JPMeaney,

We, also from Texas, will be moving to HK at some point this year. All of the information you have seems to jive with what we have heard. We will also be using Export a Pet. On the US side of things I found, via contacts at Continental Airlines, Pacific Pet Transport. They are located at LAX (bascially) and will arragne transport of your pet/pets from LAX to HK and also coordinate with Export a Pet on a routine basis. They have shipped over 3500 animals to Asia and never had a loss. For HK transport they use Cathay. You will still use Export a Pet for the HK end of things, but assuming you can get your animals to LA, Pacific Pet would handle them from there. This is the route my wife and I intend to take with our cat. However, my company will pay all costs on both the US and HK end of shipping our cat over. Good luck. Pacific Pet Transport's number is 310.373.7774.

Hi guys,
I am from Houston, Texas. I will be moving to hk after this summer with my two dogs and four cats. hope someone can give me some advice.
I have done some homework about the import of pets to hk. I contacted the agents here in Houston and the export-a-pet in hk. they both quoted me high price, so i want to do it all by myself. I have friends in hk who can get import permts for me. But is it possible to do it myself?
The shipping agents here in Houston told me the pets will fly northwest cargo from houston to Amsterdam, Holland. Then stay overnight there and fly to hk the next morning. But I really don't want my pets fly this route. Should I take them to LA and fly from there? I want a direct route. What airline is the best for the pets?
I also check out the requirement form afcd.gov.hk. It mentioned that all the certificates should be endorsed by full time salaried government veterinary officer. Where can I find them? Are those vets of humane society government vet?
Also, the export-a-pet of hk told me it's quite difficult to get the residence certificate (the one saying this is Rabies free for six months here prior departure). Is this true? US is not a rabies free country?
anyone want to share your experience of shipping pets to hk from US, please contact me at iceberg_secret@yahoo.com
Thanks
Rachel

Airport to Discovery Bay - dog transport

Hello fellow pet owners.

I am currently in the process of organising to get my dog to Hong Kong from Melbourne, Australia.

Does anyone have any advice/contacts on who to utilise to get her from the airport to Discovery Bay. Also, if you know approximate costs, then that would also be great.

Many thanks.

we live in midlevels and i found that the transport company that handled our paperwork for our dog was WAY too expensive an option for transport home. they said the reason is that there is still some paperwork to do at time of pick up, which is true but still, honestly???

so i went to the live cargo unit myself, picked her up, and called a taxi to take me to airport express at airport. i actually took her on the airport express train (in cage is no problem) and then a taxi home. all in all not too painful given the expensive other option.
