Question About Tefl

Hey everyone, I'm new here , i'm currently working in Europe and i'm planning to find a job in Hk maybe, as my GF is a Hk resident. Currently, i'm graduated from university as a major in Sports and PE Sciences, plus have a coaching certification in swimming and volleyball. I speak Portuguese,Spanish and English fluently. This year i want to enroll in a TEFL course to try finding a job as english teacher in HK, but im not native speaker although almost near native fluency. My question is if i do have got any chance in finding places to teach although im not a english native speaker????????????

Hi Boneco

Welcome to the boards.

Well you don't have to be a Native English speaker to teach so don't worry, As long as your accent is pretty neutral and people can understand you then its not an issue.

So don't worry, Why Tefl though? You can probably get a job at any of the international schools as a sports coach without any problems so you could try that option. But of course TEFL will increase your chances and options too.

Thnks for the help given, as a matter of fact i already thought about the thing of coaching at international schools, but isnt it a waste of time, as far as i know, Hk immigration rules states that foreigners only can apply for jobs which cannot be filled by local people.

Jimbo's right...try PE or sports coach at an Intl. school, they will require someone with native English or near fluency, something most locally trained coaches/PE teachers wont have, and that's your angle in....
for what it's worth, the school I teach at (KIS) and the school my cuz and her hubby teach at (HKIS and CDNIS) use native English speaking PE teachers...worth a try

You could also apply in some of the private clubs here. Some of them have some serious classes for kids and adults (gymnastics, tennis, swimming) to name a few.
