From the office of Chigger

Alright folks, so this is straight from the desk of Mr. Chigger! As you all know (or for those of you that didn't, u will in a momet) I am coming to Hong Kong in August if I can. I am saving money pretty good so far (maybe that is a slight strech...beer still is attractive in all countries and it washes away a lot of problems!)

Anyways lets cut to the cheese. Basicly I was wondering if anyone has any suggestions of work of anytype I can do while looking for work in HK that:

1) Will be legal (will apply for visa though employment)
2) Will be able to make a little money

Thats all I need! I live like a local in many way (party like an expat) You guys know how I am! I need tips...Wanna save money for my ticket and bring my mom over for a few weeks. Then wanna have money saved for living but have some extra income incase it takes awhile to find a job! Tips please!!
Chigger

thought you were going to do TEFL?

you can teach pretty much straight away as soon as you have the qualification and you will get sponsorship.

Yep Jimbo, I am working hard on TEFL. I am getting the TEFL Diploma from where u sent the link to me. I am already on module 5 (just finished it like 3 minutes ago) and I am going strong....

Just nervous I won't be able to get a job so fast...

Oh believe you me you will!

Language centres are always crying out for qualified teachers so you'll be fine.

I'm working on setting up a language centre sooner or later so I may even end up hiring you!

Asian Teaching English ?

Hi,

Sorry to hijack your topic.

It seems that there is an evergrowing demand for TEFL qualified english teachers.

As some of you might know, I was previously in HK and went back to Oz. I'm tempted to go back to HK/ China again.

Being Chinese and speaking both mandarin and cantonese, what are my chances like if I were to get TEFL certified and have teaching english as my backup plan while job hunting. Naturally, English is my first language and I am fluent in it to cosider this option.

My primary concern here is that English teachers are hired based on the fact that you look like a Westerner.

Thanks for any feedback.

Cheers

Shouldn't be a problem, they don't discriminate anywhere near as much as they do in China.

I know plenty of BBC's etc that are teaching out here in hk so its not an issue.

I have a couple of friends who are in the process of looking for teaching jobs in HK, with TEFL, but cant seem to find jobs that will provide visa, they seem to expect people with HK ID/visa to apply.. any links to teaching positions that will provide visa?

Helles.. are they looking for jobs in private schools / language centres, or in mainstream schools / international schools? For the latter type, they usually would arrange working visa when they confirm your appointment. You may not need to have specific teaching qualifications either, but of coz it depends on what kind of teachers they're looking for.

Keep good eyes on the websites, the coming weeks would have lots of recruitments coming! Let me know if you need more information!

Cheers
Blom

@ Mike - good luck and do come back sooner!!

I dont think just a tefl qualification is enough to get into an international school, is it? They are looking at language centres/local schools - like what you see on jobsdb or classified post really. And they say the feedback hasnt been amazing either, or that one has now turned around and asked for a ref letter for 6 months teaching experience in order to get a visa?? It seems to be more complicated than first thought..

Yeah that could be the case for international schools.. for local schools, some of them do recruit teachers with TEFL. It has been difficult for schools to recruit NETs last year, so it could be that the most of the schools still haven't posted their ad. For language centre, I think Jimbo can give you more updated information

Also there is a NET scheme offered by the Government. The scheme was closed for this year but I think it worths to have a look. Maybe can send them an email and se if there is vacancy still?
