Do the Hong Kong Police grab the piston grip or is it just me? Everytime a Hong Kong police officer sees me he or she places their hand on the piston grip. I am currently in Jordon and walk everywhere. The Police may be checking Triad looking guy's ID, glance at me and the hand goes on the pistol grip. Not just in Jordon, but in Hung Hom on Sundays when all of the security officers are off and the police are out and about. Have other Gweilos experienced this or is it me? BTW my user id is related to the mandarin pinyin for square not the menacing fang. I am a teddybear.

It's called weapon retention. If they catch you looking at them and their weapon, they're trained to hold onto it to prevent you from snatching it...

another thing I noticed. (since I used to do that kind of stuff) there is no lanyard on the weapon and a lot of the time I've seen a few holsters unsnapped. Not to hard for me to grab from them. (not that I would though)

I've often wondered why so many HK cops have revolvers instead of semi-automatics like a Glock.

Same as Japan, they don't use them as much over here like the police in the US.

In general the beat constables don't hold their grips even in crowds because they should have snapped on the safety strap. Maybe you just look suspicious.

| There was a proposal to give female officers semiautomic pistols (Glock 17s or 19s) but it apparently didn't work out. The Glocks have much higher capacities and a significantly lighter trigger pull. I guess they were worried that the HK Police would end up shooting themselves. The capacity of the S&W .38 S&Ws used here in HK is 6 rounds. The caliber used here is used exclusively in Hong Kong - the HK police insisted on a special round. Glock 19s can hold 15+1 in comparison while the 17s hold 17+1. Since there aren't too many shootings in HK, I guess they don't really need to upgrade. Cops in the US shoot themselves with their Glocks all the time. I owned a Glock 23 (.40 S&W) for a few years and I know the only way these cops can be shooting themselves is if they pull the triggers on their weapons..lol In terms of pricing - Glock offers excellent prices to law enforcement agencies. I'm pretty sure the Glock would work out to be about the same price as one of the all steel S&Ws currently in use. If I was openly carrying a weapon here in HK, I'd hold onto it too. lol...I'd try out for the HK police but my Cantonese isn't good enough and I can't read or write Chinese.
