Question Bringing electronics from Australia to Hong Kong - any problems?

When bringing computers, ipods etc are there any hassles with the voltages? I know the plugs themselves will need adaptors... my only worry is the difference in voltages. Any ideas?

Same voltage, no issues - just the plugs as you say.

essentially the same voltage, same fequency.

I was advised (wisely) to avoid using the adaptors as they spark like crazy. So, if you have a few low wattage devices you wanna use, bring a power pack and cut the Aussie plug off, stick a HK/UK plug on it. great for mobile phone chargers etc... Alternatively, to quieten the uproar against power packs, just get a new power lead for your computer, and change the plugs on everything else.

I would say that Hong Kong has what they call in the US 'dirty power'--that is power that spikes up and down a bit throughout the day. Most devices are able to handle these moderate flucuations without too much problem, but I noticed many of the convertor plugs (not the transformers, but the plugs) would often blow out (especially if they have a built in fuse).

I would recommend a few other threads on this site re: what to bring, and what to sell. Ipods, laptops, hair dryer, small stuff I'd consider bringing. TVs, Desktop PCs, big monitors--you might do well to sell them back home and buy new ones in HK.

Yeah. I heard dirty power here can be a problem. I just brought an Aussie 6 point power board with a surge arrestor in it with me, and plug that in through a convertor plug. All my Aussie stuff goes into that.

IMHO it would be better to cut the Aussie plug off the end and stick a fused UK/HK one on it. The wiring diagram comes with the plug...

Sparks did fly

I am here now. And just picked up an adaptor to use in the short term. Thanks for the info... I will re-plug. Only brought the small stuff with me. Funny though - the dirty power issue, the provided kettle in my apartment sparked away and no longer works first time I tried to use it. Doesn't really fill me with confidence when plugging in my fairly expensive gadgets.

The only thing I've ever had trouble with is charging my mobile phone. Worked fine in Australia, then when I moved to HK it never charged properly - only got 1/2 a day out of a charge. Did a trip to Singapore and it charged fine there. So I bought a new charger in HK which works just fine here, but on a recent trip to Singapore using that charger, the phone decided to switch itself off whenever I plugged it in!

No problem with anything else though - TVs, VCR, stereo, PCs etc etc.
