External hard drive

Need to back up my photos and music. Any suggestions on which external hard drive to buy? Also, anything else that I should keep in mind before paying for it?

Make sure that the external drive has ONE drive in there. Some of them combine multiple smaller drives on the external unit to make it look like one big one ... that technique (known as RAID) is not recommended for the purpose of an external system.

I just bought a 250GB Lacie Brick which is really stable. I have had enough of the cheap ones you can buy in the computer centres so spent a couple of hundred extra knowing (touchwood) that it would last longer and be more secure.

Hmmm.....wasn't aware of that. Will keep it in mind. By the way, is there any way of telling (besides asking the salesperson) if the unit has one or more than one drive in it?

Any other tips?

a cheap and dirty way would be to email the files to your gmail account.
I keep a lot of spreadsheets and text files zipped in cyberspace so that i can get a hold of them whenever/wherever I want

I'll help you take a look sometime. maybe we can head to the wanchai computer centre later this week if you're going to the CEC show.

Iomega, Western Digital, Seagate, Lacie. Are the best brands to go for.

Oh and will you only be using it to transfer data to as back up or will you be accessing data on the drive on a regular basis?

If its the latter then don't go for usb as its not meant for accessing data on a regular basis so it'll be slow. Go for firewire if its going to be regular data access.

Nice, kombuchakid! But I think I will keep my data with me.

Uploading pictures....yes I always do that. But my purpose to upload is to share with family & friends. Hence, not all photos get transfered to cyberspace. Can I have prints delivered in HK using Flickr.com?

Jimmy, we can go to the Wanchai computer center sometime next week, if that is ok with you. What and when is the CEC show?
