Impossible...

I am in Japan and it won't be released until July 14 at price of 400,000 YEN (about $27,000HKD).

So I'm sure it will be available on July 15th.....hahahah!

Don't bother till the end of the year. Some technical specifications are being changed ... specially HDMI 1.3, which I understand is not in the current gen HD / Blu players.

You must mean another player as there already available in the US/Japan and 27HKD? i doubt it when the A1 can be had for as low as $450USD and the XA1 $750 in the USA of course!

I was hopeing to get a US version as i here there region free HD/SD dvd.The piracy protection has not been implemented on HD discs as of yet so the hdmi is a none issue right now.
Shame were a stone throw from Japan and yet always the last to get new stuff and even then we get the honor of paying alot more.
Thanks for your replys
Will.

Had a HD-A1 for some time now and have to say, it rocks
DD+ audio with high def video.HD-DVD's are encoded in VC-1 and BR-DVD's are encoded in MPEG2.So far the Blu-Ray movies have been pretty much savaged by early adopter and review sites, they seem to still be suffering from compression artifacts as well as poor transfers from the Master copys of some films.
Here are a few review sites (they do both formats):

I don't think to many in Hong Kong like the brand name Toshiba, at least thats the impression i get so i think Sony will do alot better here.

Does it do a decent job playing PAL DVD disks as well? And is it multiregion in that respect (R1, R2 and R3 reqd)?

Am struggling to find a cheap, interim player here that does decent PAL playback. All the popular DVD players (Mediatek based) seem to get slated for lack of 2:2 cadence support - leading to jaggies. I don't want to shell out for a top spec Denon either at this stage. Shame as the cheaper models (e.g. BBK 988, Pioneer 490/696) are great on NTSC and can be had for next to nothing.

Am making do with my mac mini for now.

I have the U.S version and it plays NTSC R1 Discs, the Japan version plays R2. Neither plays PAL discs, however the Euro HD-DVD launch is in Novemeber and will play PAL discs.
