My wife and I have been living in the N.T. for a month now. Its much, much quieter here than in Hong Kong proper. It is very clean, and we feel very safe. We even take walks along ToLo harbour at midnight. There are lots of lights and many couples (Chinese) out walking as well.

The towns here, are obviously much smaller than down south, but they seem quite self sufficient. Lots of places to eat, buy groceries and shop for clothes or whatever else you need.

There is a large university in ShaTin and a decent English speaking population in that area. Also a large mall complex to meet your purchasing needs.

There is loads of walking, hiking and parks up here. We haven't seen many of them, but have a long list of places to visit up here.

A real setback for the N.T. is the lack of English. There are many restaurants that have no English menus or pictures, thus it is impossible to eat there. None of the staff speak English and we have yet to learn Cantonese. Also, there are very few Expats living up here so businesses cater to the Chinese population, but we don't mind.

Hope this helps, -Brad

Rictea!

As Brad mentioned, there're a couple of nice places in NT. Shatin and the area around is very nice, with a bit less densely populated than Kowloon and HK residental areas. There're quite a lot of foreigners who choose to live along the KCR towns, like Shatin, Fotan, Taipo, Fanling and so on, where the transportation is good and the air is better than downtown.

Sai Kung is also a nice NT area. Maybe the transportation is not as good, but there're lots of nice and natural places like beaches, country parks, etc. Actually HK has around 60% (Correct me if it's not the right figure) area which is country park, and most of it is in NT!

Sometimes when we seperate HK into different parts, we do count in outlying islands like Lamma, Lantau, etc into NT! Just some basic info about HK

Hope it gives you a picture about NT then!

Cheers, Blom

I live in Shatin in New Territories, so I feel obligated to leave a msg haha. NT is pretty cool to live in and you can get all the cool thing here in the New Town Plaza, different cuisine, furniture, electronic product, cosmetics, fashion, toys, bookstore, park, museum. If you wanna do some tourist thing, you can go to the HK Heritage Museum in Tai wai. There is a 10000 buddha monastry near Shatin KCR station. What kind of jobs are you looking for here?
