Medical Attention for an Expat

I need some advice. I am a Canadian expat living in HK on a one-year assignment. I need to go to a doctor and am wondering how the payment/reimbursement works with Health Care back home (if there is any reimbursement?). I will likely go to a clinic. Has anyone had a similar experience that can tell me how it works? Appreciated!

Do you have any health insurance? If so then you need to consult the terms of that insurance.

If not then it is very simple - you pay at the point of delivery. For HKID card holders treatment at a hospital outpatient clinic is HK$100 per visit. Private doctors are whatever price you agree with them. If you don't have insurance then there is no-one to reimburse you.

I don't know how it's done but my understanding was that OHIP ( and presumably other provincial plans) would reimburse expenses incurred overseas not exceeding the max of its own in-Canada coverage schedule. Since it's just a one-year assignment, I presume you're still ordinarily taxable back home so you should be able to use your health card for claims without worries that you might jeopardize tax non-res status with Revenue Canada. Check if the website of your plan back home has an FAQ or something on this and how to claim (my knowledge is dated - been 12 years since I turned in OHIP membership when my employer transferred me overseas).
