Jobs for American College Student for Summer

Hi, I am a college student from California that is planning to go to Hong Kong for a bit over two months from the end of June to the first few days of September and am planning to work as an English/SAT tutor here. Over Christmas, I met with the owner of one of the companies there and he basically said that I could teach there over the summer. However, I am not necessarily guaranteed a job.

My question is how easy is it for me, an ABC who knows some Cantonese to find a job, preferably in the education field, if my original plans fall through? I go to a pretty good school in California and have prior experience tutoring before. I already bought my ticket and am in the process of finding an apartment, so I'm set on going already and am just evaluating backup plans. Thanks alot!

I think it might be easy to find something... I think there is always a need for English tutors/teacher not only in Hong Kong but in other countries as well. My cousin did something like that last summer, though I don't know the complete details, but it was something like teaching at an international or private school in Tiu Keng Leng (forgive me if I'm wrong about the spelling, I'm an ABC too!!)

I'm in a similiar boat as you... college student with a possible internship lined up in Hong Kong for the summer and speak a decent amount of Cantonese to get by. What school do you go to in California?

You should be able to get an English teaching gig relatively easily. I have a few ABC friends here who teach.

Do you need any sort of certification to teach english for just a few months? And also, do you recommend doing it through a company or privately?

Where did you find the job?

Hey,

I'm a University of Pennsylvania student, and I was just wondering where you found your SAT/English tutoring job. I'm also planning to be in HK at the end of June and have had a lot of experience teaching SATs to kids in the Philadelphia area.

I applied for a job with the Princeton Review, but I couldn't make it to training since I already had a full-time job. They won't hire non-grads though...

Hi Jay,
Where are a few places that your friends have applied at or working at? Seems like a disadvantage if I wasn't blond hair and blue eyes teaching english. Any leads? Thanks!
