Dogs in Shanghai

I am considering an assignment in Shanghai . Our dog is our only child and we cannot consider coming to Shanghai without her. I have read that Shanghai is not that dog friendly but that dog ownership is on the rise. I am less concerned with taxation and paperwork and more concerned about what I have seen as laws prohibiting walking dogs outdoors.

Any perspectives??

Angry Dogs in China

Hello

Well I am in the same boat .
My husband is in China at the moment . A company in Wuhan is considering hiring him for Wuhan office possibly Shanghai . I am looking at all aspects of what a move from Australia to China would mean for us and that includes my 2 dogs. After reading Roberto notes in having dogs in China ... well its not encouraging . My dogs are Australian Shepherds , collie breed/ herding dogs hense require a lot of exercise ... and boy! do we love our walkies

Ok so no barking , kept inside , and do not scare general population , CHECK! that I can deal with

But what about taking them for walks in parks or isolated woody area ? is that permitted , cuz if its not , I am no going to China , Hubby can find himself another wife .

cheers

My sister moved to S'hai last year with fiance and dog in tow. She soon found out that she wasn't allow to take her dog for walks in public areas. However, she was allow to let him run free within their private park/open space area. It was huge but not ideal and it made her feel like a prison guard after a while.

Hi Guys!

I am from Singapore and nice meeting u all. I have brought along my 2 doggies (Shih Tsu) from Singapore to Shanghai in 2004. Those days, we need not send our doggies for quarinteen when arrived. Now, I heard they will need that for a month when arrival.

And yes, I have been facing problems while living in my apartment last year in XuiJiaHui. My neighbours (Shanghainese) complaining my doggies making too much noise?! Feel like reminding them I am keeping a dog but not a FISH!! lol

There was once an incident that really made me feel miserable. I was walking my dogs (with leashes) within our development where the compound is pretty hugh. There was this local shanghainese lady, (later then I was informed by the securities that she was not even a landlord nor tenant of our development, she only came for the mahjong games in our clubhouse), swinging her car keys right infront of my doggies trying to scare away my doggies but that irritated 1 of my doggy to lap towards her. I pulled away my doggies and kept apologising but was not accepted, people stopped and gathered over, she insisted to blow her top resulting the arrival of the police. I was brought to the p/station cuz she insisted the police to file a report against me that my dog has made a mark on her leg. Without even listening to my explanations, or allowing the police to check her so called "injury" she persued and asked the policemen to bring the case against me. Result was, she was lectured by the policemen hinting that there wouldnt any wounds or bleeding (just a red mark) that she was just trying to squeeze a compensation out from a foreigner! I then, voluntarily gave her my name card and told her for the past 2 days if she are really feeling sick, she could just give me her medical reports and bills, surprisingly, she did not take my name card and left without a word! The policemen were friendly enough to explain to me that such people does exists and reminded me to leash my doggies while walking them and keep my doggies' license as and when such happenings...

Finally, all I have to say is "Yes" there is such a rule here in Shanghai about walking our babies in the public. It will be much safer to walk them within your apt's compound and remember to put a leash on them, remember to avoid walking too close to the locals unless you are fully confident that your babies will not be irritated by any of they strange reactions when your dog are walking close them... Otherwise even your dog barks at them, they will report to the police and u may get a fine!

Thanks for your reply. It sounds like it is challenging to have dogs in these areas. If we move to Shanghai, we would like to live in an apartment in city center rather than an expat compound further outside the city center.

You mention that you cannot walk dogs in public in Shanghai but that you can walk them within an apartment's compound. Are there apartments in XuiJiaHui that have sufficient outdoor space within their compound for dogs to walk or exercise?

Thanks

Hi GKNYC,

Previously, I was living in a apartment call "Xi Ya Tu" in English is "Seattle", the road name is "88 San Jiang Lu/Long Cao Lu". About 1 and a half years old. It's walking distance to "Cao Bao Lu" Metro Station, 2 stations away from "Xui Jia Hui" Metro Station. Well, I consider this apartment's compound is hugh enough for my babies to walk around as compared to the rest of the 2 apartments that I have lived in.

i brought 3 dogs and a cat with me from australia to wuhan three years ago. finding suitable accommodation is a problem, but not impossible. expensive though. but you must be aware that it is not possible to return the animals to australia from china. quarantine regulations do not allow it. this is inflexible. the only way to get your dog back to australia is to relocate them to another country that will accept dogs from china and from which australia will allow them to be brought in. they must reside continuously in this third country for a minimum of 6 months. after that there are further quarantine requirements in australia.
