| Books! Quote:
I'm not really from South America, but I guess I was in one of my lifetimes. (Haha!) I really like books from South American authors. If you have the time, read "100 Years of Solitude" by Gabriel Garcia Marquez. I have read it about 3 years ago, but the images which the pages evoked in me still linger as if I had just put the book down a minute ago. (But hey, I discovered it before Oprah did! Haha!) "Love in the Time of Cholera" is also good, but I prefer the story-telling of "100 years.." From the Philippines (where I am from), you may want to read books by Nick Joaquin. His more popular one is "The Woman with Two Navels". I don't think there's much contemporary Philippine novels out in the market right now (fellow Pinoys, correct me if I'm wrong). Most of the ones I see are collections of short stories, or of articles the writers have published in newspapers. If you are inclined to read such, look for the series of Twisted books by Jessica Zafra (especially the earlier ones; she's now on her 8th, I think). I think this is going to be an interesting thread. I hope a lot of people take the time to contribute here. :-Dona |

| In the category of "quick handy life manual" I would recommend "The Prophet" by Khalil Gibrain. A Lebanese poet who narrates in a beautifully simple way about life..... |

| I am reading a fantastic book at the moment called BUDDHADA by Anne Donovan. I found it on Lamma Island for only $10. I think one person has read it. It is about a working class guy (a dad hence the Da) from Glasgow who discovers Buddhism. It's about the affects his discovery has on his family and friends. It is written in Glaswegian accented English if that makes any sense e.g. "Whit is it wi these southsiders, every place has got tae stert wi a C". You get used to it really quickly. I am finding it hard to put down and don't want it to end. It is funny and sad and basically just brilliant. |
