Ubuntu Breezy Badger and Internet Access

Hhi there! i've already tried in researching the web for the answer to no avail... =(
how can i set-up internet connection on Ubuntu? in win xp, you have there the option to automatically get IP and DNS so no need to enter it manually...however i think you don't have this in Ubuntu.

my internet subscription is netvigator from pccw. thx

I don't know Ubuntu or Netvigator specifically, but I can tell you that Linux is quite capable of getting network settings using DHCP, which is all Windows is doing.
Asking around, I was pointed at this guide to setting up network on Ubuntu

i assume you do not have an external router, right?

in that case, you need to follow the instructions for setting up pppoe. there is two options that the unofficial starter guide provides you. the first option is to open a terminal window and type

Code:
sudo pppoeconf
then you just follow the instructions.

if that doesn't work for you, you can try option 2: http://ubuntuguide.org/#rp-pppoe

if you are getting some error during any of this, write back with the exact (and FIRST) error and then maybe someone can figure out the problem.

i also use PCCW, but i have a router so my setup is a little different.

Unhappy

thanks vmlinuz and alyssum..but i can't still enable my internet using Ubuntu OS...=(

when i tried 'sudo pppoeconf' in the terminal i get this message saying that the system has found 2 ethernet interfaces, eth0 and eth1, and asks if these are all the ethernet interfaces i've got..when i click on yes, it scans the eth0 for PPPoe Access Concentrator and PPPoe Access Concentrator (Multi-modem mode). same thing goes for eth1. then, i got the message "sorry, i scanned 2 interfaces, but the Access Concentrator of your provider did not respond. Please check your network and modem cables. Another reason for the scan failure may also be another running PPPoe process which controls the modem."

then i tried doing the option 2:
Quote:
if that doesn't work for you, you can try option 2: http://ubuntuguide.org/#rp-pppoe
i get the error, 'resolving frankandjacq.com...failed: temporary failure in name resolution'

in manually configuring DHCP (intructions here --> http://ubuntuguide.org/#configurenetworkconnections), my problem is that i don't know exactly what DNS server/s to add... =( i'm stuck in windows now.

D'oh. I made a very stupid mistake on that last email. Option 2 is not an option for you because it requires downloading a program first (off the WEB!).

Anyways, we can still troubleshoot option 1. First of all, did you have your ethernet cable plugged in and PCCW modem is turned on when you ran 'sudo pppoeconf'? You need to have everything connected and on before you run it. If you have done this already, recheck all the connections and try reseting the modem.

Also, are you dual-booting Ubuntu with Windows? If so, does Windows connect without problems?

oh, you probably shouldn't use the 'configure network connections' because they won't work for this case. even if you did know the DHCP you still need to login with your name and password to connect to your ISP. that's why you need to use pppoe. (anyways, you shouldn't need to know the DHCP server because it can be handled automatically between your computer and ISP). moreover, i am not sure whether the ethernet is activated or not will interfere with the pppoe configuration. if my instructions above don't fix the problem, try running pppoeconf after toggling the ethernet connection in the networking settings.
