Japan

I am planning a 10 day trip to Tokyo but I am wanting to travel abit in Japan as well. Can anyone recommend day trips from Tokyo? Is it worth going to Kyoto for a few days? Anywhere else I should consider?
Thanks

Japan is a fantastic country. Do all the touristy things in Tokyo ... and make sure u get to the Harajuku train station on a weekend to see the Japanese Gothic culture --- freaks!

Koyoto is cool too, plenty of famous temples. Make sure you stay in a Ryoken for at least a couple of nights to sample old school Japan.

Hokkaido up north is great for Skiing, although the season is pretty much over now. But there's a good excuse for a trip next yr too!

Maybe buy the Lonley Planet guide book to Japan, it's cheating a bit, but Japan can be a bit tough to get around sometimes and the book helps.

The 7-day Japan Rail pass is great value if you want to visit more than two cities, you can only buy it outside of the country.

Enjoy!

If you're lucky and you're interested you could watch a Sumo wrestling competition. I regret missing out all three times that I visited.

its not easy to get the ticket for sumos, especially those close to the central ones. they are expensive and they are usually sold to the sponsors.
if u are too far away u can hardly see anything i'd think

yeah i heard that about the sumo wrestling. I think that you can buy tickets at the door but the seats will be right at the back so you will need binoculars. I also heard that the seats are a little tight at the back as well.

Anyway, I have now sorted out my itinarary and its jam backed !!! And yes thanks - I have heard about the rail pass and Im definitely going to get one of them.

Tokyo is a cool city to go and see but I think you might be struggling for things to do for 10 days, there isn't a huge amount of sightseeing type things to do. If you can get away to kyoto for a day or two I'd do that.
Have fun.

I used to live in Kyoto and it was one fascinating place. If your schedule allows it, I'd definitely go there.

From Tokyo, you can take day tours of the city including the Imperial Palace or a day trip to Mount Fuji and the Hakone region. Just make sure its a clear day, cuz if the mountain is clouded over, its pointless.

Kyoto is fascinating and well worth going. The Golden Paviliion, Hall of a 1000 Buddhas (Sanju-Sangendo), Kiyomizu Buddhist Temple, an afternoon trip to Nara close by for Todaiji.

Hiroshima is also well worth the trip if you can swing it.
