HK ID Card Holder Returning - Can I work

I left Hong Kong in 1986 but wish to return. I still hold my old HK ID card, can I legally work there or do I need sponsorship?

Also where's the best place to start sending my CV (resume). I've got 15 years contract programming experience C++/C#/Windows/UNIX/SQL etc

Thanks

John

If you have the Right of Abode (or Right To Land) in Hong Kong, then yes. Otherwise, no.

riyaaz will become famous soon enough
You may have lost your HK permenant residency because people who hold HK ID cards need to ensure they make regular visits back to Hong Kong every 3 years in order to maintain their permenant status in HKG. Have you been returning back here for vacations etc? I am not if this is true, may be someone can prompt me on this.

True, but in that case you revert to the Right to Land, which is really permanent (doesn't require visits every 3 years) but which still gives you the right to work.

I was there just a couple of week ago. I didn't have my ID card with me. Infact I think it's lost, but I remember the number. I have a British Passport which also has all my old stamps in it.

Thanks

John

I've not been back for vacations. Just a couple of weeks ago, the first time in 20 years.

From what you've said I'm reasonably sure that your previous stay here doesn't confer any special benefits. Read this page: http://www.immd.gov.hk/ehtml/topical_7.htm (particularly paragraph 13) to be sure.
