Broadband provider poll

Still trying to decide between Broadband provider, thought it'd be useful for everybody since this topic comes up a lot here, to do a quick speed poll of people's connection:

This neat website
http://www.numion.com/YourSpeed3/Run.php
does a quick test and displays statistics specific to HK.

The test results diverge since it is traffic and server dependent (even DSL connections are really shared past a certain point). Run it several times, and get a feel for the typical ranges you get.

It'd be useful to see if users of Netvigator or I-Cable or HGC or some of the others get wildly diverging results.

Of course, these tests are far perfect, but hopefully we'll be able to identify some patterns.

Here is a typical result I get from Netvigator 6Mbps plan:

Download speed: 394.99 49.37 39%
Upload speed: 366.04 45.75 78%
Surfspeed inside Hong Kong: 539.05 (67.38) 39%
Surfspeed average (worldwide): 259.84 (32.48) 46%
Surfspeed outside Hong Kong: 224.14 (28.01) 71%
Latency: 308 milliseconds

Note that I am not going thru a WiFi. I don't know how much one would affect the results since in theory you'd have interference from your all of your neighbors' WiFi networks. Though since the WiFi is much faster in general, hopefully it won't affect the measurement much.

I did do some head-to-head tests between the 2 who are available in our new building (with a friend who was i-cable), and while the average speed was about the same, and the i-cable was at times faster, the pccw was way way more consistent. Sometimes the i-cable wouldn't finish loading up the page at all. This seems consistent with what I've read before. Just wish pccw had the soccer : (

I have been worked in two big ISP/Telecom company

Listen me, never never subscribe to I-Cable, their Customer Services sucks, pissed me off

for HGC, if your building can proivide 10M for individual and run in enthernet, you could consider that, if not, please subscribe to PCCW

As PCCW can provide a good Customer Services once u make a complaint

I experienced this so called good customer service when I first had PCCW install their netvigator line. Often the adsl modem would fail to connect but NOW was unaffected. It was sorted out by an on-site visit but it took more than 10 emails, a number of phone calls and 6 weeks.

My experience

My experience with PCCW support was mixed. My initial phone call when my internet stopped working, yielded a technician on the line within seconds. Good start. He had me do some checks and then concluded i needed a visit from a technician. The technician arrived that afternoon. Also good. But he then spent an hour pulling all the cables out, swapping modems, checking files,etc..before concluding that i needed a new network card in my pc. With dismay, i showed him out. Hang on, i'll have a look myself. Can't hurt. Within 30 seconds, i'd located the fact that my wife had disabled the network card accidentally (she says!). So how come this brilliant young technician failed to check something so simple? I guess he assumed it couldn't be that simple. My conclusion is overall, good support. Another day and a different technician would probably have fixed me up in seconds. So i give PCCW support a thumbs up overall.
