Special Educational Needs

Hi,

We are considering moving to Shanghai and have a child with Downs' Syndrome.

Does anyone have experience in educating a child with SEN in Shanghai or elsewhere in China?

We contacted the British International School in Shanghai who were unable to help directly. They did suggest that we could employ a "helper" for him (similar to the arrangement in UK). So my second question is - if we needed to recruit a helper for our son with good English skills and experience in this area, how may we go about it?

Thanks for any feedback

Jane

Jane, You might get a better response on GeoBaby as we have parents on there who have either lived in Shanghai or have moved there.

come with your child and I can offer some help

shanghai has some good resources to turn to, you just come and we may help in many ways, i have a lot of experiences in helping such children in previous many years, for more information, we can continue writing here until we find a way to get privately connected.

Hi Angel

The only information I have managed to find out so far is from the English Schools Foundation in Hong Kong. They have some facilities for children with moderate and servere learning difficulties but places are very limited. There is a waiting list for a place which could be up to 12 months or more depending upon circumstances.

I spoke to Mr John Barker who is the Special Educational Needs advisor for the ESF Foundation. He was very helpful.

If I find out any further info I will pass it on. Likewise I would be grateful to receive any information you may come across in Hong Kong.

Jane

thank you

Hello Jane,

Thank you for your kind advice. I'm still negotiating for my package to HK so, we're still unsure when we will actually go there.

Anyway, have a great weekend ahead of you.
Angel
