| Don't bother. There is no import duty but all cars are subject to a first registration tax when they are licensed for the roads in Hong Kong. The tax will be based on the purchase price and import fees and a few other little things.
New cars in Hong Kong include the price in the cost of the car but an imported car will be subject to this for its first ever registration in Hong Kong.
The rates are as follows (in Hong Kong dollars):
First $150K, 35%
Next $150K, 65%
Next 200K, 85%,
Remainder 100%
If it is a cheap car then it is not worth the effor twhen you could buy something cheaply here (cars are cheap to buy second hand). If it is an expensive car hence you think it is worth it then you will get absolutely (fiscally) screwed in taxes.
Most people actually buy cars here and ship out to Australia because they can make a profit on them resold in Oz, especially medium to luxury cars. |
