Hi everyone,

My wife, baby and I are moving to the Yuen Long this August. Money is a real issue (salary is 16,000 a month). As I have never been to Hong Kong before, where can you recommend for living cheaply?

Our budget must be below 4000 a month, but ravelling to work for me is not an issue.

As a further question, should the three of us stick to an entirely Asian diet, what would our monthly food bill be around?

Not sure in Yuen Long but in Tin Sun Wai you can get very decent flats (in terms of size and cleanliness for around 4.000 HKD a month, I even know of some friends who enjoy facilities such as swimming pool, clubhouse...for as little as 4.500HKD a month). The commute is about 15 minutes.

but you must expat a big increase in transportation cost (unless your job is in the same area)

expecting to be HK$1400 per month to pay for transport to works

Yeun Long isn't really a good place to live in, I prefer Tuen Mun..

Hello Teachertim and family.
Just like you to know that i live in Yuen Long and if i can help you with anything please feel free to ask. Yuen Long is a busy place then where in HK is not? Food is very in- expensive either to eat in or out,maybe a mix of both.Being in NT most things are alot cheaper here than in central areas.
We have a nice park and good size swimming pools.Plus much more.Feel free to ask me for more.You should be able to get accomodation at the price you want.Hope this helps you.By the way,where are you coming from? Im from England.

Thanks for all your posts.Bobbyjo,thanks for the kind offer, I'm from the midlands, but currently reside in sunny Rhyl (can't wait for the change in climate) my wife is from the Philippines, so we are looking forward to returning to Asia.

We hope to be over in or around 20th August and may settle in the Kam Tin area. As I've never been to HK before I'm probably not sure where we will rent, cost however is our main priority.

Hope to buy you all a pint very soon!
