tattoo shops?

Here's one that's got me stumped... any tattoo shops in China? Anywhere - maybe even Taiwan? Somebody told me that tattoo shops are outlawed in the PRC and Taiwan, but I'm curious to hear from those who actually live there...

Question where to look?

Are tattoos popular in China? In the US it's become something of a craze, and I know that there are some world-class tattoo studios in Japan. Some people are really into traditional Chinese images for their tattoos, so I wonder what the perception of it is in China?

Thumbs up Fang, you rule! Now for the big question...

Nice list... I think this will keep me occupied for a little while at least. By the way, I am getting a surprising number of good responses from schools that are looking to bring a teacher on this summer. Do any of you think that my tattoos are going to be a problem? I mean, they are all easy to cover with a longsleeved shirt, but will I be in for a rough time if I walk the streets during my off time with my tats showing? As I said in my earlier post, it's just not a big deal here in the US, but I want to be respectful of China's customs. Of course, I'm a pretty nice guy, and I am easy to get along with - so I do have that going for me.(?!)

Keep them covered if you can as the kids parents won't like to see them on there kids teachers as tattoo's still have this stigma as being linked to triad and gang activity.

heya, i think it depends on how big your tatoos are and what age you are teaching.
when going for intervies, i was advised i cover mine up with a plaster because they will judge me badly for it.
however, i dint cover it up. mine is small though.and i still got several job offers in hk. even in china where i am currently working they didnt say anything. i think it would be better if you are teaching children to cover them up and if you are teaching adults, i wouldnt worry so much. the children would judge you less but the parents would worry more about the impression you would give them, whereas i think the adults wouldnt think themselves so impressionable. does that make any sense?!

Miss Pinkie - thank you for the feedback! I think I understand what you're saying about the general attitude towards tattoos... my situation may be a bit more extreme because I am covered with them. Of course as I stated in an earlier posting, you would never know if I wear a dress shirt. In fact, I work in a corporate office, and haven't had any problems. I think you make a good point about the parents, though. I think it's like the old saying goes... there's a time and a place for everything, eh? My main concern is if there is a time OUTSIDE of work! I'm curious as to whether I would be too much of a spectacle if I were wearing a T-shirt and shorts at the grocery store or working out at the gym.

Hi Rueben,

There are a number of tattoo shops in Beijing. I had a tattoo done at one just behind Sanlitun Bar Street last autumn. People there were very good and strangely, just about the best service I encountered during 7 years on the mainland. Really good artwork too.

Let me know if you would like details
