Part-time jobs as a US citizen in HK??

I am from America, I am moving to HK for 6 months with my boyfriend. He was temporarily transferred to HK with his job. He went out to HK last week, and I will meet him there next week. I am trying to do as much research as possible now, as I would like to start working shortly after arriving in HK.

I just graduated with my B.A. in Econmics. Right now I am only looking for a part-time job, as I would like to travel and enjoy the city while I am there.

What kind of working visa do I need to get to work part-time? I am most interested in working an office job for an American, UK, or Australian company in HK, as I only know English. Do they have staffing agencies that work with America, UK, and Australian companies is particular to assist people in placing part-time or temporary jobs??

Also, I would not mind teaching, but have no idea what the requirements to do that would be???

Any imput would be greatly appreciated as I am very confused and not sure where to start??

THanks!!!!

You won't get work permit sponsorship on a part time job I'm afraid.

You could do cough private english tuition cough to get some money in the meantime but you will need some sort of teaching qualification though as thats one of the things the parents will ask for, But not all will.

Jimbo, thanks for info.

What if I would work full-time, do they have staffing agencies that help people who only speak english? Do you think it would be hard to find a job only knowing english?

Where would I get more information about private english tuition cough?

You would need to get a work visa before you can work legally...

The process is similar (but much easier) to what the US makes a non-resident go through .. no visas for part time work. Find an employer, get them to sponsor you ...

Yes, theres plenty of agencies out there that will deal with people with only english language skills.

Try jobsdb.com.hk for a list of them and look at the jobs listed there to get an idea of what skills/experience are in demand.

the largest agencies out here are manpower there website is

http://www.manpower.com.hk

Oh and never ever say to an agency of prospective employer that you will only be here for 6 months or so as they won't bother finding you anything and the employer won't want to go through the hassle of applying for a work permit on your behalf for you to leave a few months later.

Private English tuition is usually done via word of mouth and also try advertising at your local park n shop or wellcome supermarket to where you'll be staying.

Can I apply for my own work permit from the states to expedite waiting for one once I get there??

Is it true that it takes 6 weeks to get one once I have found someone to sponsor me?

Can I get one without a sponsor?

Individuals can't apply for a work permit on there own, The work permit application needs to be submitted by the prospective employer and it may or may not be granted by immigration depending on the skills and experience of the applicant in question.

It takes 4-6 weeks for the permit to be granted usually quicker if all the relevant paperwork is in order. Oh and don't forget to bring your paperwork with you such as your high school diploma's etc etc.

Theres one other route which you could potentially try and thats to get an english teaching qualification such as TEFL and this can be done online in less than two weeks and this will pretty much guarantee you a teaching job where you will get work permit sponsorship if you're a native english speaker.

Yes, yes, no.

And you won't be able to get any sort of residence permission unless you do find an employer who will sponsor you for an Employment Visa. You can only get a Dependent's Visa if you are married.

So you will have to come as a tourist and leave at least every 3 months.
