| Mobile phone sim cards? Hi guys, Just wondering if they use sim card technology in HK similar to the UK, so can I bring my handset with me from the UK and then simply slip a HK pre-pay sim card into it? Or do they only sell phones with the sim card built into the phone like in Japan? And is text messaging something that exists in HK or is it only emailing from your phone again like in Japan? Thanks |

In Japan, they have phones with the sim card built into the phone, so if you lose the phone you lose the number. This is the same for contract or prepay phones. You can't remove the sim card and put another one into the same phone. Just wondered if it was the same in HK. Thanks to everyone else Last edited by JonnyC; 06-04-2006 at 12:21 AM. |

| With the caveat that some carrier operators (notably what used to be Cingular in the US) that lock their phones so another carriers SIM doesn't work, and that GSM phones in the US are 1900MHz, and thus will not work here unless they are tri-band or "world phones". |

text messaging like in the uk, no difference. but one thing to note is that, both the caller and the receiver ( or whatever it's called ) are paying when you talk unlike in the uk where only the caller pays. |

| Also, if you don't plan on calling a lot or are not here for long, you can buy a "People's" SIM card at any 7-Eleven. Very very cheap with lots of free starter minutes. I think they are like under $100-$200 bucks. |

| They used to have a SIM card vending machine in the TST MTR station. Is it still there? It had GSM and CDMA sim cards. |
