I used to live near in Lawrenceville and then in Somerset, had to drive to the train station, take the NJ transit and then walk across town like you do. I'll be working in Central. I'm also in the process of discussing with my employer all the details. I saw you posted another thread on COLA. I can't help with that but if you have other questions, please feel free to PM me.

Alex, Southside is mainly for families. Young couples tend to live in Mid-Levels/Happy Valley. Night life is in Central/Wanchai. Your wife can join the American Women's Assn. They organise loads of activities during the day. They'll introduce her to others who've just arrived and they can explore HK together. www.awa.org.hk

Rani: One more question. My wife works in catering at a major hotel. Do you know if not speaking Cantonese or Putonghua she will be able to work there? Thanks again

Stanley? Re-reading these posts, would Stanley be an option for BraddockRd or Applefan, in addition to the ones already suggested, given that its a nice area, less congested but will also have quite a thriving resturant and shopping scene after working hours? Any Stanley dwellers out there?

Hi Braddock and Applefan Hi Braddock and Applefan, I am also moving to HK in a few months (august 1st to be exact). I currently live in Flushing NY and commute about 45mins - 1 hr each way. So I agree with you guys that people who think 30 mins is too far is a little bit weird for us but actually by HK standards that may be true cuz of the longer working hours. Nevertheless, it all depends on what environment you want to live in. I will also be working in Central and have been looking into areas outside of that area (mainly for some quietness and cleaner air). My fiance's family suggests Taikoo Shing or Quarry Bay. There are some very nice apartments 35-40k for 3 bedroom 1000sqft. Commute is very very convenient since these areas or on the MTR path. I don't recommend southside because the commute may actually take much longer (unless u plan to drive). Also, during the hurricane season, taxis and buses are harder to come by. Just something for you to consider. Lastly, you may want to consider the shopping and entertainment options. I don't think there are that many on the southside but if you guys don't mind commuting, then that shouldn't be a problem. I have lots of research on HK, perhaps we should start a NY/NJ forum to share suggestions and experiences. When are you folks moving to HK? Regards, George

Esquire1113: Hi! I'm looking at moving probably some time around June or July. I know it may sound strange but I really want to live on the south side. I grew up in HK although I haven't lived there for many years so I'm prepared for not having any entertainment around me. I've also looked at Pok Fu Lam a bit. I'd be very interested in finding out what you've learned and would also share whatever info I may have as well.

I'd be interested in hearing your experiences/knowledge about moving to HK too. Working hours are 1 determinant of why everyone wants to live 30 mins commute away or less. You want to be home ASAP crawling out of the office in the early hours of the morning.
