Hi there,

I am looking to move to Hong Kong next year and gain work as an English Language teacher.

I know that there are many restrictions on qualifications (I have an English Language Teaching Certificate but no University degree), but would any one be able to give me some advice as to what is actually accepted over what is required?

Also, how do schools now view sponsoring of new English Language Teachers. My girlfriend is a HK resident and we are looking to get married later next year, would this type of thing help influence a school in sponsorship?...so many questions.

Any help would be great.

The govt / private schools need a degree and additional certification, so your best bets are with language schools / private tutoring.

Also, I forgot to mention that I am British passport holder (30 years of age), what sort of working visa entitlements would I qualify for?

No visa entitlements as such. You do get 90 days stay as a visitor. If you get married your wife can sponsor you for a dependants visa which will entitle you to an ID card and allow you to work, as long as she is a permanent resident.

If she's an ordinary resident i.e. has a work or conditional visa then you will have to apply for the right to work just like anyone else who is not a resident.

It helps to have a TESOL or CELTA certificate as that is what most language schools for when hiring an english teacher.

A tv programme here interviewed an expat teacher a few years ago. He felt frustrated and decided to quit the job because the headmaster forced him to use the teaching method commonly be adopted here - giving students so many homework, forcing them to recite, etc. The more homework a student have, the happier parents and headmaster would become. Anyone teaches English in local school in HK? Is it true?

Hicbart...you need a little work on your grammar. I'm an English teacher here in HK and I've been teaching for two years now. One in New York and one in HK. I was born here and I'm up for British citizenship in the next year or so. Having a UK passport and being Caucasian will help immensely, especially if you don't have an odd foreign accent.

Do you have a Bachelor's degree?

Just reread your post. I'm sorry about picking out the grammatical error. It was a comma splice! Pretty minor...sorry. OK, you can probably get a job as a kindergarten type teacher if you get a certificate of some kind. a CELTA, TESOL or a TEFL are all good choices. Good luck!

I am a local girl. Unfortunately, this kind of teaching method happens to English and other subjects in majority of local shcools.

It might be boring...but it works...there are better ways to go about it though
