Hi,

I've travelled a bit in Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam. Phuket & Koh Samui arelike the asian versions of Costa Del Sol, sure you can escape the Starbucks hordes on both islands, but you're going to have to work to get away from the main resorts. When i go to Thailand I prefer Ko Samet or Koh Chang - they're more for the backpacker crowd - not so many upmarket resorts and more relaxed. If you're dead-set on going to Samui make sure you take some time out to go to Koh Toa, it's less developed than Samui and has great diving - however Big Charlie is moving in there.

Personally, I think Sri Lanka has the best beaches, nicest people, most relaxed atmosphere of all beach destinations in Asia. - go south to Unawatuna, Mirissa, Tangalle etc. You can also head into the beautiful mountains for some clean and refreshing air. Get the train from Colombo, through Kandy to Nurawa Eliya. If you don't love it as much as the beach i'll give you your money back ! (train fare only!).

Kens.
