Living in Aberdeen?

I am moving to Hong Kong this summer to take a job in Aberdeen. I gather most expats live in Happy valley, but i gather rents are cheaper in Aberdeen. Is Aberdeen a good area to live in? What are the disadvantages and advantages of living there?

Many thanks!

Anita

There is no MTR line, but plenty of bus lines that will bring you easily and fast to all places in and around Hong Kong, Sai Kung and Mong Kok included.
So it is not a real disadvantage that there is no MTR line; you will only miss it when it's raining like hell... ;-).

I m living in Ap Lei Chau, and it seems that two brand new estates will be open soon in Aberdeen... However, many expats live in the newer estates of Ap Lei Chau / South Horizon.... really nice area and definitely cheaper than the Midlevels / Central area.

Disadvantage: Not only one single bar in Aberdeen, maybe we should think about opening one... KIA; what you think? :-) PM me.

Best thing about Aberdeen is probably that there are loads of good local restaurants which are easily accessible to expats (i.e. all have english menus and people dont look at you funny when you go in there...)

You can buy most the things you need in the area too, and it has a couple of supermarkets. On the down side, no MTR but this isnt a biggy - good bus links to everywhere and easy to find a Taxi. (to LFK etc is about 60 (can get it for about 40 on the way back if the roads clear and they dont take 'the scenic route'.))

Hi Anita

Aberdeen is good - very local HK - great dim sum rests..

The Aberdeen Boat Club is a good club to join - also for weekends
easy to get a ferry to Lamma - walking and seafood rests.

Very easy to get to Wanchai / Central / Happy Valley thru Aberdeen
tunnel and Stanley 20 mins on bus.

All in all with the cheap rents in this area - good place to start in HK
but very built up high rise accom - Taxi from Central about hk$70

Cokey

Thanks for your help and valuable advice. It does sound like Aberdeen would be a good option for me, given how much I hate a daily commute to work, and the fact that it sounds like the area has all I need. Lack of bars won't bother me as I don't drink (boring, I know!). I especially like the easy link to Lamma Island and its long walks.
