Aside from the obvious car driving thing, is there any other reason(s) to have a driver's license?
In the US it functions like a citizen ID badge. You need it to do all sorts of things like opening accounts.

No - in HK we have ID cards for those purposes. If you don't drive then there is no reason at all to have a HK Driving Licence - it is, after all, just an "annex" to your ID card - the photo is only on your ID card anyway - there isn't one on the driving licence itself.

Really? Can you exchange your U.S. licence for a Hong Kong one? I thought the US licence is only good for one year and after which you would have to take a test to get a HK licence. Could someone please confirm? Thanks.

Well, that just saved me $1800. Thanks!

Maintaining US Drivers License

Driver's licenses in the U.S. are issued by the individual states. It will depend on the state where you have your residence and driver's license issued. Most U.S. driver's licences have a photograph on them. So if you're in Hong Kong and need to renew, it's pretty tough to renew. Because of 9/11, most states have also tightened up their renewal requirements. For example, you can renew you license in Virginia only one time and they will issue you a license without a photo. But forget about renewing it more than once.
