Question Where should I do my CELTA TEFL?

Do any of you English teachers out there think that doing a TEFL / Celta course in Hong Kong would be better than doing it elsewhere in terms of making contacts / getting work afterwards...

I am tempted to do the course in Vietnam where a Celta course is about £ 600 GBP cheaper...but if the higher priced HK course will give me more work possibilities.....?

Many thanks in advance...

Oh no not another wannabe teacher!

To be honest it makes no difference where you do it.

TELF is TEFL no matter whether you take it online, In China, In U.K etc etc.

You won't get more 'contacts' if you do it in HK to be honest, Once you qualify then its up to you to apply for schools/language centres and or go for private tuition.

Hi,
I did my TEFL course in Hong Kong, and the organisation who ran it did offer work afterwards which is great. However, they only do this, if you already have a working visa. I didn't have a visa, so had to make my own arrangements anyway.
I think wherever you do the qualification, you will find work OK.

Thanks for the replies....If I arrive in HK on a dependant visa, how easy will it be to get a work visa.....I presume it's easier for an employer to sponsor someone on a dependant visa than on a tourist visa no?

Hi HKJ,

Check this thread for heaps of info on the latest policy re dependents:

Dependent visa holders in HK

Basically, the government recently announced that it's going to reinstate working rights for dependent spouses; now there's a bunch of us on the boards waiting for them to annouce when...

Makes no difference to the employer whether you are on a tourist visa or a dependent visa, the application process for a working visa is the same.

That said, there will be a change to the law allowing dependents of those on working visa to work without needing a work visa themselves. There is another thread on these forums discssing that.
