Thumbs up Is it really possible to "buy" a second citizenship?

Hi guys,

I've accidentally found some websites on the internet today offering services such as helping you get a second passport from another country. (and it makes me curious)

You will find about over 10 websites on the internet if u google "second citizenship" or "second passport".

http://www.eu-immigration.com/index.html
http://www.right-way.net/second_citizenship.php
http://www.gosacp.com/index.html
http://www.europassport.org/content.html
http://www.goccp.com/ENG/secondcitizen.HTM
...

Those websites claim their customers are mainly americans (who want to run away from tax burden) or chinese PRC or indians (who want to travel with visa-free). It actually makes sense to me BUT my question is IS THIS FOR REAL? is it possible? or it is a fraud/internet scam?

Has anyone ever tried this or know someone who has? If these services are for real, can we find something like this in HK? Pls post ur opinions and tell me what u think..

cheers

I think it is for real.

A lot of countries allow you dual citizenship and allow you to "buy" citizenship via some sort of investor rules.

I have heard of this being possible for the UK, Auz, NZ (all as investor) and even the Phillippines etc. as a retiree.

The thing is getting citizenship to Aus, NZ, etc.. by investment cost a lot money and u have to stay there and spend several years there..but for these services, (for example getting a passport from a british commonwealth country Guyana costs u only 30k USD, and u got it after 4-6 weeks) is it too good to be true? :-/

You can 'buy' pretty much any passport and you do this by approaching the embassy or consulate of the country concerned. For example you can get HK resdiency status with an investment of HK$6.5m.

Some countries are higher, others lower but each case will be judged on its merits. Al Fayad has been trying to buy a British passport for years, but even being the owner of Harrods, England's most prestiguous department store didn't work!

The agencies either charge you to fill in the forms, just go straight to the embassy of the country concerned and queue up, or pay an agency to do the admin.

Alternatively other agencies do sell you scam passports which will not get you into many countries. Buyer beware!
