Wine & Cheese

Are there any shops one can buy GOOD wine from Europe or the States -- same question for cheeses --

or know of any wine/cheese of the month clubs that ship to Hong Kong?

I'd try any of the city super stores for wine and cheese.

Best ones are Harbour City and Times Square.

There is a pretty good selection of cheese at Great in Pacific Place. But it does serious damage to the wallet. The Watson's Wine there has reasonable wine selections as well, but you can't get away from the 80% duty on wine here so it won't be as cheap as you would get it elsewhere.

Hey ! For once, I know the answer for this one... Must be because I'm french ;-)

You can buy some good french wine (didn't try those from other countries) on http://www.wineshop.hk

As for the cheese, I go to Citysuper.

Another one to consider in Pacific Place is Remy Fine Wines. They also have other oultets under the name of Rare Wines (something like that).

Chile wine best value?

Hello,

When you buy red wine in Thailand the best value is with wine from Chile ( http://www.bkkapt.com/ ), but what about Hong Kong?

Thanks.

Unfortunately, you pay a premium for French. Anything else seems to be about equally bad value. Nothing is particualrly cheap compared to any major wine drinking market. I tend to drink New Zealand whites and Italian or Australian reds here.

PDLM, have you tried any Sicilian wine in HK? Any good? What is the average price? I just drink the wine I bring from Italy, so I don't have any clue about market price in HK

No I haven't, although I believe Wellcome will sell you some for about $60 a bottle. I doubt I'd want to drink it though.

My taste in Italian tends to be quite limited - Amarone and also Tignanello (an expensive luxury which I blame Cathay Pacific for introducing me to). I also tend to do most of my wine drinking in bars/restaurants where I would reckon to pay about $450-600 for reasonable Amarone, and about $800-900 for the Tignanello.

But as seems quite common in Asia, there is quite a lot of badly stored wine around, particularly at this time of year. So it is worth getting to know the bar or restaurant's "bad bottle" rate before you start shelling out big cash.
