Interesting point, something I hadn't considered.

But I am not ripping DVD's, I am converting things like AVi's to DVD format using Nero and burning it that way. Would have have a region set? Is there an easy way to tell?

They also don't play in my PS2. Are PS2 region encoded?

Thanks

Also depends on the brand of DVD. Remember+R plays in some DVDs, -Rs play in others. I know Pioneer are good and play almost all the variations of DVD. A lot of DVD players cannot play unfinalised discs. What brand of player are you using (home DVD) - and which type of discs are you using?

Hi Nutta

The discs I have tried recently are Mitsubishi -R's and Imation +R's.

The DVD player is a new (last 6 months) Pioneer system as part of a home cinema thingy. The Pinoneer system can also write DVD's itself (one of those ones with a built in hard disk which can then copy stuff onto DVD) so it should be no stranger to burnt DVD's I would have thought?

I must admit I am so baffled by this.

Not likely as the process of ripping will strip out the Decss coding giving you region-free .vob files. Nero will do the writing job to DVD fine. When you say that the finished DVD plays on the pc do you mean that inserting the disc will automatically start up your software DVD player (like PowerDVD) and start playing it? If it does then this confirms that the disc is a DVD video. However, DVD players are very fussy creatures. The more expensive the model the less likely it is that it will recognise pc-burnt discs. My Sony DVD player will play discs burnt on my pc (and some others) but not "my friend's" discs from Shenzhen. My other no-brand DVD player will play anything.
Are your discs rewritable (RW) or write-once (R)? Generally you are good to go with write-once discs. Failing all that try good brand name discs like 3M, Sony etc.

Doesn't seem to work on any player - my brothers in china, mine in England, mine in HK, my PS2 even. But does pop up as a DVD when I put it in my PC. No errors in the logs either.

You can understand my frustration. I will go get some Sony discs. I thought Mitsubishi, Imation etc where meant to be good brands but maybe it is time to try the best!

Thanks again for your help.

I curse anything made by roxio, and would defenently follow Jays advice and get nero7.

A dual layer low q brand goes for about 8-10$ per disk.
Another option is to split the dvd to two disks, plenty of info on the net for that.
