US papers, despite complaints in the US, are not as openly biased as you might encounter in Europe and elsewhere, i.e. no paper in the states would ever call itself Republican or Democrat. That being said, most have a bias that is detectable if you just read it for a week or so.

As far as what to read, the Washington Post online edition is probably one of the best online papers in the country, but the LA Times and San Francisco Chronicle are also pretty good online. The NY TImes started charging for premium content recently, which is annoying. I've never like the Chicago Trib's website. And of course there is McPaper, USA Today.

To get a good flavor, you really should try to read some geographically diverse papers, not just the big national ones. Dallas Morning News, Seattle Post, Miami Herland, Boston Globe, St. Louis Post, etc.

It is a pretty big country...

Personally I prefer the national enquirer and the onion

Seriously though all the other ones mentioned are worth reading.
I look at the International Herald Tribune online and its fine for me.

By the way, you can read almost all the newspapers & magaznies you want FOR FREE at the Hong Kong Library in Causeway Bay. Just bring your ID card to get a Library card. They have a huge selection of current and past publishings.
