Prosumer Video Cameras/Canon XL2 Does anyone know where would be the best place to buy prosumer video gear? I've seen quite a few shady places around HK offering a XL2 for 21-24k which sounds too good to be true so I'm a bit wary. Any recommendations? Thanks

I went down to the Canon Store on Sunday in Hung Hom on Satuday and they said the best place to buy it would be Wing Shing as they offer an official warranty. I went to Wing Shing but they are a bit pricy for my budget; 26k. Do you have any ideas where else I would be able to get one?

there are a lot of stores in the mong kok area. the whole street is lined with shops that sell electronics. another good place is this building that in every floor is 1 store. i forgot the name at the moment. it's just at the corner of the block where wing shing is. right beside the mtr exit. you might want to look at coxell which is i think around the 11th floor i think. not sure, but it's listed on the elevator.

most are ok. just make sure it's not what they call a "water product" aka grey market import. make sure you see the warranty card and it says HK / China warranty and nothing else.

There are a few websites that offer you tips on buying cameras in HK. There are tricks they do like sell you the actual one on display (box it up, etc) rather than a new one. Charge extra for basic things (carrying case, lens cap, etc). And of course, watch the warranty. I have never been in the camp that says cameras in Hong Kong are cheaper then they are in the States, for what it is worth. It seems to be something that every tourist to HK believes, but if you spend some time searching, you can pretty easily find a cheaper price in the US across the range of models. I bought a few cameras in Causeway Bay, some supplied on 'Camera Street' in Central near LKF (can't remember the name off my head) and priced around Mong Kok quite a bit.

"Camera Street" is Stanley Street near LKF. Actually pengiunsix, if you really look hard enough and know where to go, you really would find deals even better than in the US (BHPhoto, etc). I know of a handfull of shops that even people abroad order from them and have it shipped. It's still cheaper than buying it in their respective countries. But just like everything in life, there are exceptions.
