Indians in HK?

Hi all,

I'm moving to HK in may. My work place is in Hung Hom (Kowloon). Was wondering:

1. What would be the best place to reside in? Average rent rates? (I will not be investing in a car at this time)

2. In what are of HK are most of the Indian Expats living?

3. Is there are site (like mapquest.com) where I could find the routes from 1 address to another for HK?

Thanks
-A

1.HK's public transport system is excellent so you will not have trouble getting from one place to another. But it might be convenient for you to live in Tsim Sha Tsui(huge Indian population) or Whampoa Garden (a bit less crowded), or numerous other good places in HK!!

3.Try www.map.yp.com.hk . Its very easy to find places in HK if you have the right address(street no. and name)

Good luck and see you soon in HK

Ya, TST is the best choice for you if your office is Hung Hom. If you're too particular about your residence being close to your workplace, it's a different issue but, otherwise, there are a lot of other areas in HK which have a better environment than TST like, Taikoo Shing (distance-wise, a bit far from TST but, again, with a lot of Indians).

Average rent in Hong Kong is, I would say, around HKD 12K. Then, of course, it depends on a lor of other things like, whether you are single/ couple or a family; the kind of facilities you want in your building etc.

One thing you can absolutely stop worrying about is travelling from one place to the other. Hong Kong has one of the best public transport system.

Also, just as an additional info., there are a lot of Indian provision stores in HK which have most of the things required for cooking and routine stuff. So, don't get groceries from India!! ) I especially mentioned this since, one of my friends got things like wheat flour, rice, kabuli chane and rajma packets!!!...even packets of washing powder and not to forget, the recent suggestion by her family to carry 5 kgs. potato and onions in her next return trip to HK!!! ))

Which is why CX and Air India get tough on the baggage allowances from India.

Lol.. I wonder what if all airlines lift weight restrictions on baggage... None of the flight would be able to take-off from India

Thank you all for replying.

I am married. So will be moving to HK with my wife. Any particular reason why TST is not a great area?

I would like to be living in a nice locality, in an apartment complex with good facilities for sure.

If anyone could also pass on some info about estate agents you'll know, i'd be grateful.

Thanks once again

Personally, I feel that place is not good for living.Being an Indian, I know how it feels, when someone compares you with those living inTST. you will get lots of Indians in other places too, like Central. I m not very familiar with Kowloon area, but definitely would never never recommend TST to anybody. once you will see the place, you will understand yourself, why am i so against it.

A couple of good areas in Hong Kong are:

Tsing Yi: Has an MTR station, a huge mall at the station, apartments with good facilities, many Indians, not very far from the airport and has a totally residential feel to it.

Olympics: Again, all the above. However, apartments there are less value-for-money (that way, Tsing Yi is better). This one's closer to Central HK.

Both these stations are, however, not on the same MTR line as Hung Hom station (Which, I think, is on KCR East Rail) so, you will have to change trains to reach Hung Hom.
