PhilE has a spectacular aura aboutPhilE has a spectacular aura about
Shuttle SN41G2 (quietened but not silent)
AMD Athlon XP 2100+
512MB RAM
Integrated nForce graphics
160GB + 300GB 7200rpm EIDE disks
Pioneer 16x DVD-RW thing
(used to contain a Nebula DigiTV card but no use here )
-> hooked up to 43" plasma and 5.1 surround amp/speakers
-> good for Torrent playback and iTunes!

Thinkpad X31
Pentium M 1.4Ghz
1GB RAM, 80GB HD
(c. 7000HKD from WCC - 2nd hand)

Very tempted to replace Shuttle with a Mac Mini (would plan to try OSX with FrontRow but probably run WinXP or WinMCE now that its feasible). Shuttle would become file server and photo editing PC (requiring more expenditure on a nice Dell monitor no doubt).

Out of interest anyone know if there's a place to pick up a high-spec 2nd hand Athlon XP chip? I.e. to squeeze a bit more out of my shuttle. The guys in WCC just sniggered when I mentioned Socket A!

Classic Notebook

HP Nc6000
PM1.7
+1GB of Ram
60Go Hard drive
a small 9600 with 64 MB
all rounded by a magnesium case and a 14" screen

Got a spare PM1.5 for a silent HTPC project.. but did not find money and time yet..
Wana replace my laptop once they find out how to have some working ATI drivers on Macbook.. like PhilE waiting for opportunity to partially switch..

Badzoo - that PM1.5 would be the heart of a great silent HTPC - with something like the Shuttle SD11G5 chassis. However this model is ridiculously expensive at the moment - you could almost buy a CoreSolo MacMini for the same price!

Do you have your eye on any other small cases for the HTPC project?

I've noticed that the MacMini in HK has gone from 'ships within 24 hours' to 4-6 business days since last week. I wonder if the WinXP on Mac news triggered that... Will be interesting to see how Apple's sales figures respond this month. Apart from the integrated Intel graphics, the MacMini seems to be the perfect minimalist HTPC (or HTMac)... and even those graphics won't really be a bottleneck until we find 1080P being broadcast in HK - as if
