Can anyone please tell us how long it would take to travel to Hoi An by train from HCMC? Do we need to book tickets in advance? Would you recommend to go by train or fly there? Thanks a bunch!!

train is not known for its swiftness but i believe you;re talking about over 18hrs here.

better grab a sleeper. road network is relatively good and cheap nowadays but believe it;s still over 13 hrs.

i think i did the saigon to dalat to nha trang to hoi an and to hue and then onto hanoi....nice to break the journey up if you have time...

problem with tourism is that all the main places that people go to on the tourist trail are well and truely overwhelmed with tourists.

there are still special places but laos would provide a more authentic colonial indo-chinese experience.
