Spouse Work Opportunities

Hi

My husband may have an opportunity to take up a position within the HK regional office of his company. This is a wonderful opportunity which we are both very keen to pursue, however, I am trying to find out more about my own employment opportunities.

From initial research I understand that I would enter HK under a "Dependents" visa which would mean I would be unable to work. I am certainly not ready for a career break and would want to pursue my work in the marketing / communications field.

Does anyone else have other similar experiences they can share and how easy a spouse had found it to find employment in HK. From looking at various recruitment sites it seems fluent English and Mandarin is an essential requirement for many job opening.

Any insights / advice would be gratefully received.

The dependant visa policy is about to change. In the near future dependants of employment visa holders will be allowed to work again (but i think the date of the policy change has not yet been announced). Many local employers require english, cantonese and mandarin for most positions, no matter if those language skills are really needed or not. Also, some local companies don't like to hire expats, because they think expats are simply too expensive. I came here as a dependant as well (husband of a local chinese) and had a hard time to find a decent job, desipte university degree, fluent english, and intermediate mandarin.
