If you like japanese, Masuya on O'Connell St is pretty good:

Have a browse through the rest of the listings on that site too.

Ohhh so many to choose from
- Cafe Sydney (circular Quay) for views, food and experience. Must book ahead though - bit pricey but not really if you are used to HK
- Icebergs at Bondi
- Jimmy Liks in Kings Cross
- Blu Ginger in Balmain
- Watsons Bay Hotel - Doyles for Sunday late lunch
- The Malaya at King St Wharf
- Lots of restaurants and nice atmosphere at King St Wharf too
- Hugo's pizza
- Tetsuyas for Japanese (need to book weeks ahead)

Let me know if you need any more specific suggesions, or have a cuisine you would prefer... I love restaurants and I'm originally from Sydney so very happy to help!

The italian restaurants in Liechart are surely worth the $$, just pick one with a good view, most of them provide a good quality of italian dishes - do try the seafood platter somewhere there !

If u wanna try something more daring, Rosalina located right between braodway and Newtown was probably the best restaurant i've visited in my gap year there - dont forget to have a drink or two in Zanzi bar !!

Emma's on Liberty - a small Lebanese restaurant in Enmore and Sydney's best kept secret!

Flavour of India in New South Head Road is probably the cities best. Also consider Zaaffran in Darling Harbour and Bukhara in Double Bay. Breakfast well stick to any of the trendy areas and I'm sure the locals will have their favourites - Bondi, Padington, Woolloomooloo (*for real ), Balmain

Best Indian in Sydney is Surjits on Parramatta Road in Annandale. The indian cricket team often go there when they are in town...lots of cricket memorabilia and great food. Also Darbar on Glebe Point Road has fantastic food and lovely surrounds.

The Mixing Pot on St Johns Road in Glebe is a great authentic italian restaurant. Definitely lots to chose from in Leicchardt too. Try Porron or Il Porron for great Spanish Food - Paella and Seafood Caserole are great.

Best Japanese has got to be Sushi Bar Rashai also on Parramatta Road in Annandale. Try the Nasu Miso Steaks (Eggplant with Miso Sauce). Oh how I miss this restaurant.

If you want a good pub atmosphere with good Mod Oz food then try the Australian Youth Hotel in Broadway/Glebe area.

For Seafood then you have to try the Sydney Fish Markets in Pyrmont. It gets packed at the weekends so get there just before 12noon in order to get a prized seat on the waterfront. Bring your own wine and sauces (if you want but you can get them there) and cutlery (if you want proper cutlery - otherwise plastic stuff) and ENJOY!

Bronte Beach is probably the nicest place for Breakfast in Sydney. There are a number of places there so take your pick.

Yep agree with CT

Extras:
The London Hotel, Balmain for a pub atmosphere. In addition to Bronte, I went to the best brekkie recently in Manly, next to the aquarium. Guy Leech an old Aussie ironman owns it but I can't remember the name of the cafe. Blissful views and amazing brekkie burritos
