Ok so if I buy a PS2 (new slim one) from a reputable local (official) dealer will I be able to play pirate games from Mong Kok etc.? I thought they were region free?

No, you cant play them on an unmodded PS2. Region-Free means probably that you could play them on a modded PS2 from Europe, but i am not sure...

From what I understand, the Region-Free PS2 just means you can play Original games from different regions (PAL, NTSC, Japan, USA, etc...), not the pirated games.

here are some details when dealing with PS2 from HK;


ORIGINAL UNMODIFIED PS2 are NOT REGION FREE when bought brand new

PS2 bought from HK have a region coding [NTSC] [J]
-NTSC-means ASIA and USA, -J-stands for JAPAN and hong kong
games have the exact same [NTSC][J]code

EUROPE has the code [PAL][EU] -
-PAL-means ERUO,Australia and other countries.
so if you return to europe and buy a game there, it would be coded [PAL][EU]


you can not expect to play a [PAL][EU] game on a [NTSC][J] PS2 console.

modifying a PS2 with a chip ,alters the PS2 to act REGION FREE. THUS PLAYING ANYTHING ,from any country, originals and pirate games.


PS2 mini is actually called PSTWO
LENS BURNOUT- the reason is because in the early stages modchips are unstable, unable to control the LENS output and the speed of dvd rom spin, resolting in LENS BURNOUT. but now the devlopment of modchip is very stable. [provided the modchips are purchased legitemently of US websites.]
HK dealers will use the cheapest available modchip from china ,which cost only a few HKD. [cheap things dont last
While a stable and advanced modchips from US, will cost $50USD!!.

BTW, I found a seller who sells PS2 games $100 for 7 games, PM , I can direct you to him.
After i found this seller, i never bought any more games from mong kok , or sham shui po goldern centre. RIPOFFS and bad attitudes from triad wannabes

All machines (modded) can be bought at Sham Shi Po "golden computer center" the cost will be around $1,200 (fully modded w/one controller). The games are dirt cheap. $20 per game. Just ask the dealers for the games, because they usually don't show it out. They will give you a catlogue and you can choose the games from there...

by the way... most ps2/mini works fine after the modification. Normally it doesn't break down or burn out unless you play 10 hours straight...it read alls DVD formats and regions.. including all the privated DVD movies.

yeah, go into the golden computer center, go in through the first door and up a 1/2 flight of stairs. the 2nd shop on your right is where i get everything from. He's a good guy, have bought both Xbox and ps2 with prolly 100 games or so and only one has been the wrong version (halo2 was in french, wtf?).

cames are cheap, like 7 for 100 too...

On the island side for PSP/PS2/Xbox etc. games, you should go to 188 WanChai Road, a lot of choice and shops.
If on Kowloon side then go to SamShuiPo as recommended on other posts

All modchips will burn out your PS TWO if you dont install a good "fix". It doesnt matter if you are using the most expensive brand name or the cheapest China clone. What's needed is a GOOD FIX, its not the modchip which is the solution. This can be seen by going to the site mentioned above http://www.ps2-scene.org
