Hi guys,

I'm coming up to HK for work tomorrow (Tuesday), and i'm leaving Thursday evening. So I will have Tuesday and Wednesday nights to hit the clubs. Got a couple of questions though and would greatly appreciate it if anyone could help me out!

I am staying at the Cosmopolitan in Wanchai.

1. What's the best club to go to on Tuesday and Wednesday night for House/Dance/Trance music? I am 20 so would prefer a younger crowd, too.

2. What time do clubs start to get good in HK? Do they close early? I'm from Sydney, Australia and usually things start to pick up around 11:30pm.

3. I'll be coming up alone, so if anyone wants to hit the clubs with me on Tues and Wed nights let me know!

Also an unrelated question -- where's the best place to buy nice clothes/accessories for a cheaper price? I've heard there are some good markets in HK.

Hi,

Firstly, the clubbing scene in HK is nothing like Sydney. Even on weekends the range of clubbing options is quite limited, and during the week is pretty much non-existent. Your best bet on a Tues / Wednesday night would be to head to one of the bars at Wan Chai, some of these have dj's playing some alright tunes but be warned - there can be a lot of working girls out. The best bet would be Joe Banana's or Carnegies. As with Sydney, these places don't really get started until quite late - 11 or 12ish is normal in HK too.

If you're feeling really brave you can head to Cyber 8 at TST, its the biggest club we have and they play r&b / remixed canto-pop tunes, but be warned because is not somehwere I'd consider going alone...

Thanks very much for the prompt response saltwater. I've been to the Carnegies in Taiwan, and love it! So I will definitely be heading over to check out the HK version. Isn't it ladies night on Wednesdays at Carnegies?

Why wouldn't you go to Cyber 8 alone? Is it really that dangerous? Even for a solid aussie bloke?

How far is Cyber 8 from where I am saying? What would I be expecting to pay in a cab?

Um I've been to Cyber 8 a couple of times. The first time i went there a big triad turf war was going on, and the second time the police stormed the place as part of a big raid. So its probably best avoided alltogether - you won't have those kind of problems at Carnegie's!

As for clothes, you can have a look around Causeway Bay, or get the bus to Stanley where there are some decent markets to look around...

Hey Acid, I'm 21 and from Sydney as well. HK Clubbing is NOTHING like Sydney, it is really second rate (and that's to Sydney!!!!).

I'm guessing from your thread you're used to places like Subbies, Tank and the like. Be prepared that Cyber is NOTHING like this.

Last time we went, the scene was dead and I think it was cos it was a Tuesday night. We hit LKF and everywhere was just full of old, boring people and Dragon-i (apparently the equivalent to Cargo Bar or Hugo's) was DEAD. So we were told to head to Cyber and we actually had fun but that's cos we were blind trashed and laughing so hard at what we were seeing.

It's kind of like a high school disco except there are like no attractive people. No one dresses up and they all look about 15. The venue itself is a dump but it's funny to watch. You'll see!!

And get used to the fact that no one dresses glam, not even for house.

As for the clothing part of your query, do you mean ready-to-wear or custom-made?

AFAIK, the most concentrated grouping of export-sized, ready-wear-clothing outlets is located in Mong Kok, north of Dundas, parallel to Nathan, 2-3 blocks east of Nathan, toward Prince Edward. Sorry, I do not remember the street name. Look for the crowded walking (car-free) street.

Be forewarned. Stores are generally small and very congested. Do not presume English. I think that labels in most of these shops are generally authentic, but check details of stitching, form and fit. Also consider that clothing may be sized for various international markets.

If you mean, custom-made suits, I believe that several traveler-oriented (short-turn around) shops are located in Kowloon, more toward Jordan. Many established shops advertise in airport and hotel handouts. I presume that long-established shops are reliable. I don't know.
