Shipping from USA to HK advice

Hi,

I plan to ship by sea 6 boxes of personal stuff from Seattle USA, shopped around and decided on a company, UBox worldwide. Just before I gave the go ahead, I confirmed their total shipping cost, and it turned out I have to pay at the HK end, CFS 26USD, Documentation 20USD, Handling 40USD, and even a Gate charge 250-300HKD.

Will air freight charge the same items. Anyone have experiences they can share with me, or company recommendations in Seattle. I am currently in Shenzhen, and trying to organise everything by email, which is a drag.

Thanks in advance.

Ben

Hey Ben,

This is probably a little late to be of any help to you now..

I sent about 3 boxes of stuff (80kg) from Oz to HK recently via unaccompanied baggage. the only charges on the HK side was about $100HK "storage fee". there are a few companies that specialise in excess/unaccompanied baggage in almost every country, do a google to find one near you.

the catch is you, or an agent, must be there to clear the boxes, and they have to be picked up from the freight terminal, not the passenger terminal. it's a right pain if you dont have a van hired, as taxis cannot enter the delivery dock without a permit, and to get to a cab you have to lug your boxes thru the lift to the taxi stand on the level below the delivery docks... AND taxis don't frquent the area, so you need to call one.

you can get the boxes delivered to your residence, but they need to go thru customs, and thus more $$ and paperwork.

hey Ben,

i paid no other fees in HK, just the storage fee. the only other costs were on the Oz side. Costs all up were roughly... basic job/consignment fee of $80AUD, then a $/kg rate - i think all up for 70-80kg it cost about $370AUD, then the $100HK fee in HK. this was just great for text books and winter gear.

the company i dealt with collected the boxes one week before i came back to HK, then arranged to have them land in HK up to 24hrs prior to my arrival. basically, they give you an airway bill number, and you front up to the freight terminal in HK with the number and the staff there find your stuff for you. just allow a good hour for paperwork and stuffing around at the freight terminal.

Hope that helps,

DDF

I am planning to ship my stuff soon too, but I live in the East Coast area and I haven't found anyone suitable yet.

newbee,

For sea, try www.uboxworldwide.com
For air, try Nippon Express USA

So far they returned the best quotes
