Setting up a small business and self-employment visa

Hi,

I've recently arrived with my husband to HK, and I'm interested in starting a small consulting firm. I've spent 10+ years working in Russia, and I have a few clients from Russia who would like me to continue working with them in HK (exploring business/marketing opportunities, etc).

Does anyone have details on registering a small business in HK? As I'll be starting on my own (with the possibility of employing 1-2 others), I'm concerned about the required initial investment. Is there a minimum investment for small business owners? Is it possible to set up consulting services from my home?

Also, I am here as a dependent spouse without a work visa. Will registering a small business allow me to work in that business? And can I apply for a self-employment visa while living in HK?

Thanks to anyone who may have any tips/ideas!

Opening a business if fairly easy.

-- You do not need a particular type of VISA to be a director of a company.
-- You can go out and find an accountant and they'll set you up with a company within a day or two.
-- Using the documents provided by the accountant you can open bank accounts and conduct business.

I think the caveat is -- you're not taking a salary from your business.

You may want to drop the folks at Emigra Hong Kong a line to help you further. They offer business and other visa related services.
OR
Your accountant may be able to guide you through the process.

Talking thanks

thanks for raising this thread.. may well be setting up a company myself soon. although, given some of the quotes i got for incorporation fees today, i'd be better doing that as a business itself.. might just knock up a set of articles and memo of assoc this evening on the home typewriter !

Can anyone recommend an accountant for handling business taxes?

I set up my consulting business last year through a local HK company. All it cost was money ;-) but they did take care of everything. If you're interested, the company website is http://www.acshk.com/ . I paid about 2000USD for everything: I sent them a request and a month later I had a fully registered company in HK.

Now I'm faced with doing my first year of business taxes and the company that helped me out previously is going to charge me 5000USD for their services. That's simply too high.

Does anyone know of an accountant in HK that does business taxes? Any recommendations?

I was noticing something in the first post..

"I am here as a dependent spouse without a work visa"

I thought the laws had changed in May so that a spouse could work. My spouse is being transferred to Hong Kong next month and I thought that I would be able to work. I know this is off topic but I was just curious.

Thanks,
J

thewongs: the original post was from 3 years ago.

Rules have now changed to allow spouses to work on a dependants visa.
